Three Relegated Clubs and the Strongest Field in Years
West Ham, Wolves and Burnley all dropped out of the Premier League last season, replacing promoted trio Coventry City (champions, 95 points), Ipswich Town (second) and Hull City, who beat Middlesbrough 1-0 in the playoff final.
The Hammers were relegated on 39 points despite winning their final match 3-0. But the best betting sites now favour them to win the 2026 Championship under Nuno Espirito Santo.
The club raised over £150 million from the sales of Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville, and over 50,000 season tickets have been sold, breaking a Championship record previously held by Newcastle in 2016-17.
Tonight’s hosts, Wolves, finished bottom on 20 points with a goal difference of -41. Unsurprisingly, Rob Edwards was dismissed and Cesar Peixoto was appointed head coach in June.
Burnley, managed by Nicky Hayen after Scott Parker left by mutual consent in April, host West Ham on Sunday at Turf Moor at 4:00 PM. Notably, West Ham did the league double over Burnley in the top flight last season.

The Promoted Three and a 65-Year Wait
While the giants are falling, Bolton Wanderers, Lincoln City and Cardiff City just rose up a league (from League One). Lincoln were champions, Cardiff finished second, and Bolton won the playoff final.
For Lincoln, this is their first season in the second tier since 1961, a span of 65 staggering years.
And Saturday's trip to Middlesbrough is billed as the first meeting between the two clubs since then. See our Middlesbrough vs Lincoln City prediction before you bet!
Elsewhere, Bolton opens with a Lancashire derby against Preston on Saturday at 12:30 PM. Additionally, Cardiff will welcome Wrexham on Monday night in the first league meeting between the two Welsh clubs since March 2002.
A New Playoff Format
The playoffs expand from four teams to six for the first time this season. Third and fourth place get byes into two-legged semi-finals, while fifth through eighth play single-leg eliminators to join them.
The change means the race for promotion stays alive for more clubs deeper into the spring. For context, the regular season ends Saturday, May 1, 2027, with the playoff final scheduled for the last weekend of May.
