Cardiff vs Bolton: The Bluebirds Defends Promotion Spot From Bolton Invaders
by Geoffrey Ejiga | by Geoffrey Ejiga
Cardiff’s Late Stumble Turns Nightmare
Unfortunately, Cardiff’s momentum flew out the window this Spring, with the Bluebirds managing only one win since the turn of March.
After a dominant 4-0 dismantling of Doncaster in late February, Cardiff are winless in five of their last six games, drawing the last two and losing the one prior.
Two points from their last three games now see a previously comfortable double-digit lead shrink to just six points.
Cardiff’s promotion dream that felt within touching distance just weeks ago is suddenly under siege in the final chapter.
As if it wasn’t bad enough, Cardiff must now defend their turf against one of the few teams to hand them a loss this season: Bolton. With the form the Bluebirds enter with, The Trotters might be in for a double over Cardiff for the first time since 2014/15.
| Pos | Team | P | GD | Pts |

| 3 | Bradford City | 41 | +7 | 71 |

| 6 | Stevenage | 40 | +4 | 64 |
Bluebirds Season in a Nutshell
Despite this recent dip, this season remains one of Cardiff’s most successful in years. Before the spring slump, the Bluebirds were arguably the most balanced side in the division, blending a high-volume attack with a disciplined defensive structure.
Cardiff City’s 2025/26 Season Achievements:
- League Standing: 2nd place and currently holding the final automatic promotion spot.
- Defensive Prowess: 3rd in clean sheets today (15).
- EFL Cup Success: Reached the Quarter-Finals, eliminating Premier League side Burnley and the Championship’s Wrexham.
- Attacking Power: The second-highest scoring team in the league with 74 goals.
Bolton’s Late Season Charge for Glory
Bolton Wanderers travel to South Wales with a promotion party to hijack. They’ve been absolutely determined all year, losing only one of their last 16 fixtures since January.
Yet, even The Trotters face some late-stage drama after picking up just one win in their last five games. Following a 1-0 defeat to Port Vale, Bolton bounced back in the next with a -10 win over Plymouth, but failed to beat Stockport at home in the latest 2-2 stalemate.
Despite those recent draws, there is a sense that Bolton has a higher chance here than the betting odds suggest. With the chance to secure promotion to the Championship after their 2019 relegation, Bolton will be gunning for all three points today.
After all, they absolutely dominated Cardiff in the first meeting, keeping the Bluebirds to just 4 points compared to their 17 attempts on goal.
