Bologna find themselves under immense pressure to overturn a two-goal deficit against Aston Villa in the return leg of the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals. As they make the trip to Villa Park, they face an opponent that has defeated them twice in this competition so far. Can the Italian outfit exact revenge and book their ticket to the semi-finals or will they fall victim to yet another disappointing outcome?

Can the Villans get the job done in their own backyard?

Aston Villa have accepted weaker league results in exchange for progress in Europe. The Birmingham outfit head into this crucial tie having won just one of their last six Premier League games. Their latest outing was a 1-1 away draw to Nottingham Forest. As a result, they are in danger of dropping to fifth in the standings.

In Europe, their form has been terrific. The Villans have not suffered defeat in their last eight UEFA Europa League games. In fact, all those matches resulted in wins, which is a club record, including their recent 3-1 thrashing of Bologna in the first leg of the quarter-finals. That result also marked the fourth time they conceded a goal during this stretch.

They have one objective in the return leg: protecting a two-goal lead. European form could be key to their success in this upcoming encounter, as they've won 14 of their last 16 such games. One important thing worth mentioning is their home performances, which have seen them record 16 wins in 18 games (D1, L1).

The fact that they are being led by a man who has etched his name in the history books as one of Europe's elite tacticians only strengthens their chances of seeing the job through.

Head coach Unai Emery, 54, has four titles in European competitions, particularly in the Europa League. The last time he conquered this competition was during his time with Spanish club Villareal in the 2020-21 season, beating English opposition Manchester United 12-11 on penalties in the final. Since then, the prestigious silverware has eluded him.

Bologna have a mountainous task to climb in the return leg of the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals. The Italian outfit was beaten by Aston Villa in the first leg, losing 3-1 in their own backyard. To many, their defeat came as a surprise, considering they were the imposing side from start to finish. However, if there's one thing that led to their demise, it was their lack of creativity in the final third. They created chances worth 0.85 expected goals (xG), significantly lower than their opponents' 1.57 xG.

That first-leg defeat was a tough pill to swallow, as it ended an 11-match unbeaten run in the competition. During this terrific run, they had recorded seven wins and four draws. This was marked down on paper as their longest unbeaten run in UEFA competition. Overcoming a two-goal deficit is not beyond their reach, but the challenge lies in who they are up against.

The Red and Blues have an impressive record when it comes to competing in second legs of a European competition. They have won 13 of their last 16 such ties.

The Emilia-Romagna-based side have suffered just two defeats in their last 16 European games (W8, D6). There's no reason to look far, as both defeats have been brought about by Unai Emery's men: first in the league phase (1-0), then in the first leg of the quarter-final.

Vincenzo Italiano's men should not feel threatened as they are likely to draw some confidence from their away form at this stage. They have won each of their last five away matches and hope that this will be enough to see off Villa's threat. Check out our Aston Villa vs Bologna prediction for more insights into this game.
