Tom Cleverley will lead Watford at home for the first time this season when they take on MK Dons in the League Cup. The Hornets are favorites to see off the League Two side and here’s our preview and prediction of the first round match.
In their season-opener, Watford almost let go of three points after losing a 2-0 lead away to Millwall. Mileta Rajovic would, however, pop up with a stoppage time goal to help Watford to a 3-2 win. This was the perfect start for Cleverley’s charges after a poor run last season.
They had ended 2023/24 with only a win in the final eight matches. Two seasons ago, these two sides faced off in the second round of this competition and MK Dons won 2-0. Watford have the perfect chance to avenge the defeat at the same venue it was served.
As they seek a second win against Watford in as many meetings, MK Dons will also hope to rise from their Saturday loss. The visitors conceded two early goals and went on to suffer a 2-1 loss at home to Bradford City.
That result didn’t only represent their fourth winless outing, they’ve also conceded two or more goals in each of their last six matches. While this form points to weakness in defence, Watford failed to score just once in nine outings.
In those nine games, they scored two or more goals five times. A combination of these aspects has led to MK Dons’ recent games predominantly returning over 2.5 goals. Three or more goals have been scored in nine of their last 10 matches with the Dons keeping only two clean sheets.
