Tottenham vs Wolves Prediction & Betting Tips - Premier League

by Ian John | in Premier League Prediction

Saturday afternoon sees Tottenham and Wolves reignite their rivalry at Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium (3pm kick off). Both teams come into this game with the backdrop of good form behind them and with an incredibly even record between the two going back many years. Spurs lie 4th in the table on 47 points, while Wolves are currently 11th in the table with 32 points, both having played 24 games so far in the Premier League season. They met earlier this season in November when two injury time goals from Pablo Sarabia (91st minute) and Mario Lemina (97th minute) stole Wolves the three points after they went a goal down early on to Brennan Johnson's third minute strike for Spurs.

Tottenham - Wolves: Form Analysis

Tottenham come into the game on Saturday unbeaten in their last five Premier League games and with just one defeat in the last nine (4-2 away to Brighton). They avenged that defeat to the Seagulls last weekend, with Brennan Johnson's last gasp winner handing Spurs a 2-1 win. Goals have not been a problem in Spurs games in the Premier League this season. 14 of the last 15 games the team have played in the league have seen both teams score while 14 of those 15 games have also seen over 2.5 goals scored. The one game that didn't follow that trend was their 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest back in mid-December.

After successive wins over Chelsea, Brentford and Everton over the Christmas period, Wolves form has stuttered a little since then in the Premier League. Away from home they have done well, drawing at Brighton and beating Chelsea 4-2 at Stamford Bridge, but at home they were beaten by a last gasp Kobie Mainoo strike against Manchester United in an exciting 4-3 defeat and then at the weekend they fell to a disappointing 2-0 home defeat to Brentford, a team that they had beaten 4-1 on the road just over a month prior. The one sole Wolves have in terms of recent form is that after two FA Cup wins over Brentford and West Brom, they face a 5th Round tie at home to Brighton at the end of the month.

Tottenham & Wolves Squad Analysis

A positive for Tottenham heading into the game at the weekend is that Argentinean international Giovani Lo Celso is back in full training with the first team and could be fit enough to play a role against Wolves if required, although a place on the bench does seem more likely for the midfielder. Ange Postecoglou will be without both Manor Solomon (Knee) and Ryan Sessegon (Thigh) who are both long term absentees. Captain Hyeong-min Son's broken finger, caused after an altercation with a South Korean team mate while playing table tennis, won't rule him out of any action for Spurs and his return from the Asian Cup will surely galvanize the team.

There could also be good news for Wolverhampton Wanderers on the injury front too as South Korean striker Hee-Chan Hwang is in with a chance of making a welcome return to the team after an issue with his calf. Wolves boss Gary O'Neil has said he expects Hwang to be "fine" for the game with Spurs and that he should have trained with the first team this week. However, one blow is the loss of Matheus Cunha, who scored a hat-trick recently away to Chelsea. He will be out for a potentially significant amount of time with a hamstring issue, although the club are monitoring his situation day-by-day. Pedro Neto is a man to watch for Wolves with the nimble winger being one of the top creative players in the Premier League this season. The Portuguese star is being linked with a big money move at the end of the season.

Tottenham - Wolves Key Points

  1. Tottenham have not drawn a game at home this season and they have won all of their last five matches on home soil. Wolves are unbeaten in their last 3 away Premier League games however, beating Brentford and Chelsea either side of a draw at Brighton.
  2. Over the last ten games, these two teams have the third (Spurs) and 5th (Wolves) best records in the Premier League. Spurs picking up 10 points from those 10 games, while Wolves have mustered 17, the same number as Aston Villa and Manchester United.
  3. A massive 79% of Tottenham's games this season have seen over 2.5 goals scored. That is by far the highest mark in the Premier League this season. 67% of Wolves games have also seen over 2.5 goals hit the back of the net.
  4. Five of the last seven games between the two teams have seen just one team score. However, there has not been a goalless draw between the two teams since the 19th December 1970.
  5. There is almost perfect symmetry with the two team's records over their last nine games against each other. Both have won four, drawn one, both have won two at home and two away with the only slight difference being that Wolves have scored 11 goals to Spurs' 10 in those games.

Our Tottenham vs Wolves Prediction

The data for Tottenham vs Wolves this weekend suggests very much that this is going to be a close game. Only 2 of the last 13 games between the two have seen a team win by more than one goal. Both sides have been finding the net regularly so our Tottenham vs Wolves prediction is for over 2.5 goals to be scored and also for both teams to score.

Tottenham vs Wolves - Other Interesting Predictions

Total Home Goals - Over 2.5 Goals

We have already seen that both Tottenham and Wolves have been involved in a fair few games that have seen plenty of goals go in. While that is not unusual for Spurs, it is for Wolves who have scored and conceded fewer goals generally in other seasons. As such, I think a solid secondary bet here is to go for over 2.5 goals to be scored by the home team (Spurs) in this one.

James Maddison (Tottenham) to score at any time

There is no doubt that James Maddison's return from injury has led up to the Spurs attack, perhaps even more so than Son's return from Asian Cup duty. The ex-Leicester City man has been in fine creative form since his comeback but is overdue a goal. At home against a Wolves team shipping goals I believe offers him a fine opportunity to do that. So my third prediction here is for James Maddison to score at any time.

2 Goals Ahead Early Payout Offer

bet365 2 Goals Ahead Early Payout Offer

One of the worst feelings when placing a football bet is when the team that you have backed has gone into a multiple-goal lead only to be clawed back to a draw or to lose the game in question. This is something that bet365 has rectified for their bettors courtesy of this offer. If the team that you backed takes a two-goal lead your bet will be paid out as a winner. That is any two-goal lead so 2-0, 3-1, 4-2 etc will all be paid out early as a winner if your team is in that position. This is available in 80 different competitions including the major leagues across Europe and can be played on the full-time result market. Singles and multiples are both valid for this offer but you cannot bet on enhanced price markets. As with most promotions, if you cash out a bet in full, the bet will no longer be available for the offer in question. It also cannot be used if you bet on the draw on a game.
