Co-hosts Tanzania will begin their 2024 African National Championships (Chan) against Burkina Faso on Saturday. The two teams are pooled together in Group B alongside Madagascar, Mauritania and the CAR. Here's our prediction for the match.
Tanzania will play all their group matches at home at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium and will be keen to make the advantage count. The East Africans have improved tremendously in recent years, qualifying for three of four AFCON championships, starting with this year's.
Coached by Hemed Suleiman, Tanzania are ranked 23rd in Africa and 103rd in the world in the latest FIFA rankings. The Taifa Stars prepared for the tournament with friendly victories over Uganda and Senegal.
Burkina Faso defeated Tanzania 2-0 in a friendly played in Tanzania back in January. It was their first victory in this fixture after losing successive games when the two met in AFCON qualifying more than 15 years prior.
The Stallions, who are making their fourth Chan appearance, will be hoping to finally make the knockout rounds for the first time.
Brama Traore’s men qualified for the tournament by edging Ivory Coast on penalties after a 2-2 draw over two legs in Western Zone B qualifying.
