BC Place in Vancouver will host the 2026 World Cup Round of 32 clash between Switzerland and Algeria in the early hours of Friday morning. Nati and Les Fennecs’ group-stage matches averaged over three goals per game, and our prediction is that we will see the net ripple at both ends in this one.
Fair to say, Murat Yakin has instilled confidence and belief in the Red Crosses. Since coming agonisingly close to upsetting England at the Euros in 2024, the Swiss qualified for the World Cup with little fuss and eased into the knockout stage for a fourth edition in a row by topping Group B with seven points, going unbeaten against Qatar, Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Algeria finished third in Group J behind Argentina and Austria but ahead of Jordan. The Desert Warriors are the underdogs in this clash, but they have an ace up their sleeve in Vladimir Petkovic, who spent seven years as Switzerland’s head coach, during which he led them to the Round of 16 in this competition in 2018 and the quarter-final of Euro 2020. Can he now plot a way past his old side? Let’s get into the key stats!

Switzerland - Algeria: Form Analysis
After being held to an unexpected 1-1 draw by Qatar in their World Cup opener, Switzerland clinched top spot in Group B with a 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina and a 2-1 win against Canada.
The Red Crosses also won both their warm-up games leading up to this tournament and are now unbeaten in their last five matches (W3 D3). They have only lost one of their last 17 in all competitions.
Notably, while the Swiss have averaged an impressive 2.4 goals scored in their last five matches in all competitions (2.33 in this tournament), they failed to keep a clean sheet in this period.
Eight of Switzerland’s last nine matches have ended with both teams scoring!
Meanwhile, Algeria’s first match of the World Cup ended in a 3-0 defeat to reigning champions Argentina before they pulled off a 2-1 win against Jordan and held Austria to a 3-3 draw in their final game.
Since bowing out of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in the quarter-finals at the start of the year, that defeat to La Albiceleste was the only one they have suffered in their last seven matches (W4 D2).
The Desert Warriors kept clean sheets in five of their six matches before the start of the World Cup. However, they failed to record a shutout in this competition and are averaging 2.67 goals conceded per 90.

Switzerland & Algeria Squad Analysis
Johan Manzambi has been the standout performer from an attacking perspective for Switzerland, netting three goals from the number 10 role, including the winner against Canada last week.
Ruben Vargas is another to keep an eye on here. The Sevilla attacker has three goal contributions in as many appearances in this competition, which included scoring and picking up an assist in a 19-minute cameo off the bench against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
However, the driving force behind everything the Swiss do well remains Granit Xhaka, whose performances for club and country over the past year have put him on the radar of Chelsea this summer.
Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel and Ramy Bensebaini will come up against each other in this match!
Bensebaini will need to be at his absolute best if Algeria are to challenge here, as he will be tasked with keeping the dangerous Breel Embolo at bay alongside Aissa Mandi in central defence.
At 35, Riyad Mahrez is still the main man in the Desert Warriors’ camp. He has already registered three goal contributions in this competition, including scoring a brace against Austria that ultimately led his side to the Round of 32.
Neither team have any new injury concerns heading into this match.

Our Switzerland vs Algeria Prediction
Switzerland has been very impressive in this competition and are one of the dark horses for the title, but they will need to tighten up defensively if they are to challenge, as they’ve relied heavily on outscoring opponents to get results in recent times.
Algeria have proven that they carry solid attacking threat, but they’ve also shown that they can concede, as they shipped the joint-most goals (7) of any team to reach the RO32 during the group stage. Our Switzerland vs Algeria prediction is BTTS.
