Sweden vs Belgium Prediction & Betting Tips - Euro

 by Joseph |

Sweden hosts Belgium at the Friends Arena in Stockholm on Friday for the first of eight matchdays in Group F of the 2024 Euro qualifying campaign. The bookmakers have the Belgians as the unsurprising favorites to top the group as Austria, Estonia and Azerbaijan round out the rest of the participants. Belgium will be looking to respond positively after failing to make it out of the group stages in the 2022 World Cup, while Sweden will be desperate to secure qualification for this tournament after missing out on Qatar altogether.

Sweden - Belgium: Form Analysis

Domineco Tedesco has taken over the management reins from Roberto Martinez and this will be the young manager’s first match at the helm of the Red Devils. The team hasn’t taken the field together since the massive disappointment in Qatar which saw Belgium fail to make it out of the group stage. There were also reports of a fractured dressing room during the tournament, meaning that Tedesco could well have his work cut out for him to maintain the balance of the generational talents of the previous era while blooding some of the newer players as well. Belgium has not been in a good run of form, winning once, losing once and drawing once in the World Cup group stage. Prior to that tournament the talented side had also suffered two consecutive defeats.

As for Sweden, manager Janne Andersson will be targeting the second qualifying spot in the group despite the current odds having Austria as slight favorites over the Swedes. Sweden has played in a number of friendlies at the end of 2022 and early 2023 and should be the more settled and in-form side coming into this matchup. They played in four matches and won all four, facing off against Mexico away from home, Algeria, Finland and Iceland, the former three all taking place on home soil. The Blue and Yellow also managed to find the net twice in each of those matches so should be confident of getting a result ahead of their clash with Belgium.

Sweden & Belgium Squad Analysis

The iconic Zlatan Ibrahimovic has made a sensational return to the Sweden squad. The 41-year-old is back in the swing of things at his club team AC Milan and will be hoping to make the starting 11 here. Tottenham fans will recognize Dejan Kulusevski who is expected to shoulder a large portion of the attacking responsibilities along with RB Leipzig midfielder Emil Forsberg. Newcastle big money signing Alexander Isak will be pushing for a start in the number nine role.

Belgium still have traces of their “golden generation” littered in the squad. De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku and Jan Vertonghen are all a part of Tedesco’s plans and will likely all feature in some capacity in this match. Other players to watch out for are Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard who has been in excellent form for his club and will likely make the starting 11 here. Leicester’s Youri Tielemans and Everton’s Amadou Onana will likely partner up the midfield.

Sweden - Belgium Key Points

Our Sweden vs Belgium Prediction

It’s uncertain which Belgium side will show up as they have yet to play a match since crashing out of the World Cup in the group stage. The visitors are undoubtedly the more talented side individually but Sweden has always been a very difficult side to break down, especially when they are playing on their home soil. With the hosts having strung together a series of wins, back them to get at least a point here in a result that both managers would likely be pleased with to kick off their campaigns. Our Sweden vs Belgium prediction: Sweden double chance

Sweden vs Belgium - Other Interesting Predictions

Under 2.5 goals

Belgium has had serious trouble scoring in recent outings, mustering a measly two goals over its last five matches. Sweden will try to frustrate their opponents which could result in a physical, hard-fought, low-scoring matchup.

Both teams to score: No

In a similar vein to the under 2.5 bet, it’s likely that we get a low-scoring match here. Five of Belgium’s last seven matches have ended with at least one team keeping a clean sheet while Sweden has seen the same in two of its last four matches.
