It’s a top-of-the-table clash in the Championship as Sunderland and Burnley go head-to-head this weekend. This is the third match of the 2024–25 campaign and will be played at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland, with our prediction of a high-scoring affair.

Sunderland started their season under new coach Régis Le Bris in perfect fashion, winning both their matches with ease. They defeated Cardiff City 2-0 on the opening matchday, but the surprise was a 4-0 thrashing of Sheffield Wednesday last weekend. While they did lose 2-0 to Preston in the EFL Cup first round in between, the home fans are buzzing with anticipation.

The win over Wednesday helped the fans forget the seven-match winless sequence in home matches to end last season, where Sunderland drew two and lost five matches. Burnley also adjusted to new manager Scott Parker in fine fashion, winning both their matches in a breeze. They defeated Luton Town 4-1 in the first round before easing past Cardiff with a 5-0 scoreline. Eight different scorers got on the scoresheet for the Clarets, which is again a positive sign of things.

As they look to get back to the Premier League immediately after relegation last year, Burnley will take comfort from their form on the road. The Clarets have won two and drawn two of their last five away competitive matches, which could pose a threat to Sunderland here.
