McDiarmid Park will host St. Johnstone’s opening match of the Scottish Premiership when they welcome Aberdeen on Monday. Read on for our preview and prediction as the Saints host the Dons in Perth.
The past season was stressful for St. Johnstone, as only goal difference saved them from the relegation playoffs. With three wins in four games, St. Johnstone topped their League Cup group and will want to carry the momentum to this game.
They wrapped that up with beating East Fife 5-1 but conceding four times in the four matches remains a concern. In their last 10 matches in the league, St. Johnstone failed to keep a clean sheet, conceding two or more five times. There has been a new arrival in defence and home supporters will hope this helps.
Aberdeen have made a key change, bringing in Swedish coach Jimmy Thelin. Away fans will hope the new coach bounce takes immediate effect in the Premiership. While they had a difficult season too, Aberdeen’s wasn’t as bad as St. Johnstone’s.
They finished seventh and missed out on continental football. The key ambition for Aberdeen will be to avoid playing in the relegation group again. Aberdeen also topped their League Cup group after winning all four matches, and conceding just one goal.
They netted 15 times in the process with their latest match producing the biggest win as they thrashed Dumbarton 6-0. In their last meeting with St. Johnstone, Aberdeen won 1-0. They have just one loss in their last seven meetings with St. Johnstone.
