Group A at the 2026 World Cup will be decided in the early hours of Thursday morning when South Africa take on South Korea at Estadio Monterrey in Guadalupe. Given both teams’ need for a result here, the outright win/loss market feels a bit too risky for our main prediction, which sees us leaning toward the goals market instead.
It’s do-or-die for Bafana Bafana. After losing their opener to Mexico before securing a hard-earned point against Czechia last week, Hugo Broos’ side are still bottom of Group A. However, a win here could take them to second place and put them in a very good position to qualify for the Round of 32, either automatically or as one of the eight best third-placed teams. Defeat will end the team’s World Cup campaign outright.
The Taegeuk Warriors currently hold second place in the group with three points after losing to Mexico in their second match. Hong Myung-bo’s side need just one point from this match to guarantee progress to the knockout stage, regardless of the outcome in the match between El Tri and Repre at Estadio Azteca. There is no more room for error - let’s get into the key stats!

South Africa - South Korea: Form Analysis

After a disastrous opening match in which they finished with nine men and lost 2-0 to Mexico, South Africa managed to keep their knockout-stage hopes alive by earning a 1-1 draw against Czechia.
Bafana Bafana were significantly better against Repre, as they dominated possession (62%), recorded 17 shots at goal, including four shots on target, and ended the match with a solid 1.38 xG.
However, that result also extended South Africa’s winless run to seven matches across all competitions (D4 L3). Indeed, they have not won a match in any competition in 2026.
South Africa have only kept one clean sheet in their last 10 matches!
Meanwhile, South Korea kicked off their World Cup campaign with a 2-1 victory over Czechia, but they suffered a 1-0 defeat to tournament co-hosts Mexico in their second match last week.
Despite losing to El Tri, the Taegeuk Warriors carried plenty of attacking threat, recording nine shots at goal, creating three big chances and ending with 0.91 xG - all three stats that were higher than their opponents.
South Korea have now won six and lost four of their last 10 matches across all competitions. Notably, only a single match during this 10-game period has ended with both teams scoring (vs Czechia).

South Africa & South Korea Squad Analysis
Hugo Broos’ decision to drop Lyle Foster against Czechia proved to be a good one, as Oswin Appollis provided the team with greater pace in attack, which could be a key factor in this match as well.
Evidence Makgopa and Relebohile Mofokeng had impressive cameos off the bench. Makgopa gave Bafana a target up top and ended with two shots on target - the most of any South African player - while Mofokeng's pace and dribbling caused serious issues for opposing defenders.
South Africa were dealt a major blow in their last match, with Teboho Mokoena receiving his second yellow of the tournament, meaning he is suspended for this match. Themba Zwane is also out after his suspension was upgraded to three games.
Minimal changes are expected from South Korea for their Group A finale!
Hong Myung-bo only made a single change to his starting 11 from the first match to the second, opting for Lee Tae-Seok ahead of Kim Moon-Hwan at wing-back in the defeat to Mexico last week.
Hwang In-Beom was the standout performer in the victory over Czechia, scoring the team’s first goal before setting up the second, and he is expected to play a key role for the Taegeuk Warriors here.
South Korea have no injury concerns at present. Lee Kang-In, Paik Seung-Ho and Lee Gi-Hyuk have received one yellow card apiece so far in the competition.

Our South Africa vs South Korea Prediction
After reverting to a more familiar formation and making a few personnel changes, South Africa were much better against Czechia last time out, but they are prone to defensive lapses early, having conceded inside the first 10 minutes of both matches in this competition.
South Korea are heavy favourites to win this match, but they will need to find a way to breach Bafana Bafana’s low block. However, given the quality they have in attack, we fancy the Taegeuk Warriors to get on the scoresheet, but we aren’t ruling out the possibility of them conceding. Our South Africa vs South Korea prediction is: 2-4 match goals.
