Two sides with contrasting ambitions in the League of Ireland will face off this weekend when Sligo Rovers host Shamrock Rovers at The Showgrounds. The Bit O’Red are ninth in the league standings, while the Hoops are top of the table. Let’s get into the match prediction.

Sligo Rovers are enduring a dismal season and are firmly in danger of relegation. They are second-bottom of the league table with 19 points, just five points above basement club Cork City after 22 games. 

Rovers salvaged a last-minute 1-1 draw away to Bohemians last week, which took their record to three wins, two draws and five defeats in their last 10 league matches. 

However, at home, the hosts have won their last two matches against Galway and Waterford, a much-needed improvement after failing to win their preceding seven at the Showgrounds (D2 L5).

Meanwhile, Shamrock Rovers are enjoying an impressive league campaign, now 11 points clear at the top of the standings, though they have played two games more than the sides below them. 

The Hoops notched up their 14th win of the season last week, beating Waterford 1-0 at home. They have now scored 42 goals this season, 14 more than any other team in the division. 

While the visitors lost their last away game to Bohemians, they were unbeaten in eight on the road before that and scored two or more goals in six of those matches.
