After a goalless first leg, Shamrock Rovers and Vinkingur Reykjavik will look to progress to the second round of the UEFA Champions League. The Tallaght Stadium in Dublin will host this match on Tuesday, and the prediction is for a tight game with goals likely to be scarce.
The winner of this tie progresses to the second qualifying round to play Sparta Prague. The loser will still have a chance to test their luck in Europe, with 12 of the 14 losers in this round transferring to the Conference League second qualifying round, while two will be transferred to the third qualifying round.
Shamrock are perhaps one of the most recognizable clubs from Ireland and are looking to stay alive in the Champions League. That would be a saving grace from their domestic troubles, as they are currently fourth in the league table and 13 points behind the leaders. Including the reverse fixture, they have failed to score in two of their last three matches. Their results have also been poor, with only one win from their last four games, losing two.
Vikingur find themselves in much better form than their hosts, at least domestically. They are at the at the top of the Iceland league standings after 14 rounds, with a five-point gap over their nearest challengers. The draw in the first leg extended their unbeaten run to 13 matches, winning nine and drawing four. One of those came via penalties, and the visitors won’t mind another game going the distance. Their record in Europe hasn’t been convincing, with only one win in the last three years, but this is their chance to make a difference.
