The qualifier Sara Bejlek will seek to cause an upset in Madrid when she takes on fourth seed Elena Rybakina in the fourth round. Sara Bejlek has been the surprise package in this year’s edition in Madrid. The teenager has shocked many by advancing to this round in what is her debut in the main draw at a WTA 1000 event. She is also the only qualifier left in the competition. Bejlek has won her last two rounds without dropping a set. She defeated Ashlyn Krueger by the loss of four games in the previous round to improve her record for the season to 11-5. The Czech has moved 26 places in the live ranking to 110th, a new career high.
Elena Rybakina is much more experienced at tour level than Bejlek. She is however also playing in the fourth round in Madrid for the first time. Rybakina had never gone past the third round in her previous three appearances and twice was eliminated in the second round. The world number four defeated Mayar Sherif by the loss of five games to get over the hump finally. Rybakina has compiled a dominant 28-4 record and is unbeaten in six matches on clay. She arrived in Madrid after a triumphant run in Stuttgart to claim her third season title. The winner from this encounter will play Yulia Putintseva or Daria Kasatkina in the quarters.
