Russia got their first win in seven matches as they took on Malta in their opening game of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. After their away win, they will be up against Slovenia, who are coming from an important win over Croatia. Russia haven’t done so well lately and even in their 3-1 win over Malta, they had to secure three points with a late third goal as their hosts pushed for a draw. In their earlier two matches, they had lost to Turkey and Serbia, conceding a total of eight goals and they’ve failed to score in three of their last five matches. The win over Malta was their first World Cup qualification match since 2013 and some rustiness could be spotted on the Russian side. They have a few days to solve this and get to play at home where they’ve also not done well lately, going winless in the last three matches. Stanislav Cherchesov’s side has lost once and drawn twice in the last three home matches. They have one win in the last five home matches and their only clean sheet in the five matches came in the 0-0 draw with Hungary.

Slovenia’s win over 11th ranked Croatia set the nation on a nine-match unbeaten run. They will be hoping to make it 10 in this away fixture against a side 23 places above them. Slovenia are not very expressive in attack, but in their last nine matches, have done just what they need to. They’ve scored more than a goal in three of the nine matches but have eight clean sheets in the process. In their last five matches they’ve scored seven goals and conceded just one. The last time Slovenia lost a game was against Poland in the European Championships qualifiers in November 2019 and they have just three losses in their last 11 World Cup qualification matches. Away from home, they are unbeaten in the last three matches, keeping three clean sheets and winning two.
