Rennes were put to the sword in their first leg tie with AC Milan in the Europa League playoff round 1st leg. The French side went down to a 3-0 defeat at the San Siro as the hosts produced a fine display of finishing to put themselves at a huge advantage for the second leg. That result was somewhat out of character for Rennes, who have won all of their last five games in Ligue 1 and who have moved up the table to seventh on the back of that solid run of form. Julien Stephan will publicly be saying his team still has a punchers chance in this second leg, but it would take a monumental effort from his team, not to mention a collapse of epic proportions from Milan, in order for them to spring an upset and knock out the Rossonieri here.

Milan saw their good run of unbeaten games come to an end in dramatic fashion against Monza at the weekend. Milan went 2-0 down thanks to two late first half goals in the last minute of the half and then injury time and early in the second half, they saw striker Luka Jovic sent off. However, they battled back superbly to level the game 2-2, but Monza struck twice again in the last minute of normal time and then injury time to record a stunning 4-2 win. Milan won't want a repeat of that kind of performance here and so I expect Stefano Pioli's team to play very much a counter-attacking game, which will allow them to pick off Rennes when the French side come forward.
