Panama and Croatia are set to face off in the second round of Group L matches, both nations knowing defeat could be detrimental to their 2026 World Cup hopes. On matchday one, these two nations suffered defeats and head here with Croatia bottom and Panama third.
Croatia, one-time finalists and twice semi-finalists at the World Cup, will be under pressure here following a 4-2 loss to England. Panama, featuring at the world championship for the second time, will hope to improve on a late 1-0 loss to Ghana.
The two nations are already on the worrying end of Group L ramifications. A loss here would render Panama eliminated if, in the other group game, England avoids defeat to Ghana. On the other hand, Croatia will be eliminated with a game to spare if they lose and Ghana avoid defeat against England. Both sides scoring has been a trend in these nations’ matches, and that will be our prediction here.

Panama - Croatia: Form Analysis

Panama looked like they had control in their opening game against the lowest-ranking nation in Group L, Ghana. However, they dropped their guard late on, and the Black Stars pounced in the most vicious fashion, scoring in the fifth minute of added time.
The Canaleros have all to do now as they seek a first win at the World Cup, playing only their fifth game and against a side with serious pedigree. As seen in their opening game, Panama will have to do better defensively. They haven’t managed a clean sheet in eight matches, while their defensive record at the World Cup isn’t great either. Thomas Christiansen’s Panama has conceded 12 goals in four matches at this stage.
An average of 2.64 goals have been scored in Croatia’s 31 World Cup matches.
Like Panama, Croatia will be less pleased with their output in the opening game. They twice rallied against England but eventually lost 4-2. Their second-half performance was particularly poor as they conceded twice to a freshly powered England.
This will be a much more manageable game for Vatreni, but they also have defensive issues to note from their recent outings. While Croatia failed to score just once in their last seven matches, they only kept one clean sheet in the process. Scoring at least twice in seven of their last 10 matches, Croatia will feel this is an opportunity to rise again.

Panama & Croatia Squad Analysis
Panama midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla is still not up to speed and will have to be subjected to a late test after missing the opening match. The UNAM Pumas man also missed Panama’s warmup matches, and having last played competitively in May, a start here seems very unlikely.
Defensively, Andres Andrade will be keen on another top performance. He was the best of Panama’s defenders on matchday one, winning 56% of his ground duels and making six clearances. The LASK defender had 83% success in his 96 attempted passes.
Goalkeeper Luis Mejia is one of Panama’s four returnees after the 2018 World Cup.
Croatia keeper Dominik Livakovic was arguably their best player in the opening game despite conceding four times. The shot-stopper made a series of saves, especially in the second half, to keep the Croats in the game.
At the end of the match, the keeper had seven massive stops and will be hoping for a first clean sheet in eight international matches. While they seek some defensive reprieve, Croatia will also seek to do better in attack, and the focus here will be on skipper Luka Modric. The midfielder was at fault for England’s opener and generally rated poorly before his 58th-minute withdrawal.
Panama - Croatia Key Points
- Panama kept one clean sheet in their last 10 matches.
- Both teams scored in six of Croatia’s last seven matches.
- Croatia’s 31 World Cup matches have had 82 goals scored.
- Seven of Panama’s last 10 matches had both teams scoring.

Our Panama vs Croatia Prediction
The ambition is very clear for these two nations; a win here. After opening the competition with losses, both nations will know they can’t afford to slack any more. Croatia are expected to go out on the front foot, but Panama aren’t to be underrated, especially by a team that’s been struggling defensively.
Panama start as underdogs once again, and while it gets tougher as their matches progress, they will have the benefit of playing without much pressure. As both sides haven’t been great defensively, goals are expected here. Our prediction for Panama v Croatia is for BTTS & Over 2.5 goals.
Panama vs Croatia Alternative Predictions
Croatia wins
Croatia are the experienced side in this match, and they will want to show it from the off. Panama are only featuring at the World Cup for the second time and playing their fifth game. Croatia are here for the seventh time and have reached the semis three times in their earlier six appearances.
With that, and six wins in their last 10 matches, Croatia will feel they can pick up their momentum for this encounter. Our second prediction, therefore, is for Croatia to win.
