Wolfsburg’s opening game of the season is an away trip to Koblenz in the first round of the DFB Pokal. Pre-match predictions are backing the Bundesliga side for a comfortable win here so let’s take a look at the preview.
Playing four tiers below Wolfsburg puts Koblenz firmly in the underdogs’ position. They’ve had a mixed start to their journey in the Oberliga after relegation from the Regionalliga. The hosts’ first two matches of the season had them win one and suffered defeat in their most recent.
In the second of three straight home matches, Koblenz will be keen on avoiding back-to-back defeats after falling 1-0 to Engers 07 last week. They are only making a return to the DFB Pokal after missing since 2017. This will be their 13th DFB Pokal game in history.
Wolfsburg are coming from a shaky preseason run, where they won just once in their four matches. This game will present an opportunity to test their levels before taking on Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga opener.
Ralph Hassenhüttl will thus hope to see a better effort from his charges than they did in preseason friendlies. Wolfsburg also had a poor finish to last season, losing their final two matches. With the season just starting, away fans will want some improvement and this game presents the best chance.
In the last two seasons Wolfsburg reached the third round and this time the target should be to advance at least to the quarters.

Wolfsburg will be outright favorites in this match and having made it to the third round the past two seasons speaks to their abilities. In their first ever meeting with Koblenz, Wolfsburg should sail through with relative ease.
They did so with clean sheets in two of their last three DFB Pokal matches and we will be watching out for the same. Koblenz are coming from a loss in which they also failed to score. As they return to the DFB Pokal, they lack the firepower to trouble Wolfsburg.
