New Zealand and Egypt, two nations sitting 56 places apart, will face off in their second outings in Group G at the 2026 World Cup. Both nations will feel they missed an opportunity after opening round draws in a pool that also has Iran and Belgium. They lost crucial leads in their openers, Egypt being held to a 1-1 draw by Belgium as New Zealand shared spoils in a 2-2 draw with Iran.
In a combined 20 matches prior to this meeting, these sides have only posted four wins, and we feel both might struggle to get all the points on offer. This supports our prediction for a draw.
It hasn’t been easy either for these nations at the World Cup. New Zealand have featured in seven matches at this level, and after three straight defeats in 1982, they’ve drawn each of their last four. Egypt, on the other hand, are at the world championships for the fourth time, looking to improve on their current run of five defeats and three draws.

New Zealand - Egypt: Form Analysis

Group G is one of the most open pools in the 2026 World Cup. All four teams sit on one point after the opening round. New Zealand will want to go top with a win here but will need a few corrections defensively. While their attacking prowess was there for all to see, the All Whites struggled in defence against Iran on matchday one.
They twice took the lead but were pegged back as many times. In the end drawing 2-2 and denying Darren Bazeley’s men a first ever World Cup victory. Each of their last four matches at the world stage have now ended in a draw. With a tough game against Belgium next, New Zealand understand just how key it is to win here.
Egypt and New Zealand will be meeting competitively for the first time.
Like New Zealand, Egypt are gunning for a first win at the world championships. In their latest outing, the record African champions went close to a shock win over Group G powerhouse Belgium. They will also need to sort out their defensive play after Mohamed Hany scored an own goal in a period of pressure from Belgium.
That forced a 1-1 draw after the Pharaohs had taken a first-half lead in the game. Here, Egypt will be banking on head-to-head history more than their recent World Cup form. This will be a fourth meeting between these nations, and Egypt are unbeaten, winning twice.

New Zealand & Egypt Squad Analysis
There is a wealth of attacking talent possessed by these two nations, and that was on show in the opening round. New Zealand fans will want to see more of the flourishing partnership between Nottingham Forest forward Chris Wood and Motherwell’s Elijah Just. While Just scored both of their goals, it was Wood who provided the winger the assists.
However, improving on their current run of one win in 12 matches is not entirely dependent on this potent partnership. There has to be better decision-making in defence. The coach might consider resting 37-year-old Michael Boxall as they face a tougher, quicker opponent. The Minnesota United defender won just 38% of his duels in the Iran match.
Egypt keeper El Shenawy’s 77th cap will be focused on stopping the potent Wood-Just partnership.
Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush will be looking to cash in on New Zealand’s defensive struggles. Salah showed his lethal edge against Belgium with the assist in Emam Ashour’s goal. That was his sixth goal involvement in eight matches for Egypt.
He should, however, strive to improve on his single shot on target in the Belgium encounter. The former Liverpool man did help out defensively, though, winning 42% of his duels. With recent struggles in defence, Egypt conceding three in two matches, Salah’s defensive play could be key again here.

Our New Zealand vs Egypt Prediction
On paper, Egypt are the stronger side, and they’ve had better numbers lately as well. In their three previous meetings with New Zealand, they remain unbeaten. However, coming into their first-ever competitive match against New Zealand, the head-to-head history may not count for much.
New Zealand have shown in recent matches that they are as capable as Egypt and come here undefeated in four World Cup outings. They haven’t won much in recent times, and neither have the Egyptians. That said, our prediction for New Zealand v Egypt is for the game to end in a draw.
New Zealand vs Egypt Alternative Predictions
BTTS
Both sides scored in Egypt’s last two matches, and they will be looking to address that, with a clear need to strengthen defensively. It won’t be an easy move, given the matchday one form shown by New Zealand’s potent attack.
The fact that both nations will be looking to post a win here makes this even more interesting. New Zealand are struggling defensively, keeping zero clean sheets in 12 matches. Perhaps their attack could compensate, but our second prediction is for both teams to score.
