Naomi Osaka, the 11th seed at the Wuhan Open, will be up against Leylah Fernandez in the first round at this WTA 100 event. Two meet for the second time, four years since their first, and we have a prediction for the match below.

Osaka’s only taste of the Wuhan Open was in 2017, and she lost to Elise Mertens in the first round. On her return, she will be eyeing revenge for her defeat to Fernandez at the 2021 US Open.

The Japanese has had a pretty solid campaign, advancing to the latter stage in a number of her events. She’s lost two finals, in Auckland and Montreal, while her only title was at the ITF level, in Malo. Osaka comes here sitting 16th in the live rank.

Fernandez has had a much more solid season, if main tour titles were the yardstick. She won the Washington gong in what happens to be her only final in 2025.

Apart from that title match, the Canadian hasn’t been able to advance past the quarter-finals. However, with the head-to-head advantage against Osaka, she will be confident of standing her ground.

Fernandez is coming off a third-round defeat in Beijing. She fell in three sets to Cori Gauff, leaving her on a shaky 25-22 record for the season. Sitting 27th in the live rank, Fernandez has suffered six defeats at the first-round stage this season.
