Second seed Aryna Sabalenka will rekindle her rivalry with sixth seed Marketa Vondrousova in Stuttgart. They will battle for the seventh time in their careers in the quarter-finals with the winner playing Cori Gauff or Marta Kostyuk next. Marketa Vondrousova hasn’t won against Sabalenka since winning their first two battles. She will hope this is the year she breaks her jinx in this fixture. The Czech, who has compiled a 7-4 record, has won both matches in this event without dropping a set. She defeated Anastasia Potapova by the loss of seven games in the last round. Vondrousova is an exceptional clay court performer and has moved back to seventh in the live ranking. A deep run here will give her the needed momentum with the Italian Open just around the corner.

Aryna Sabalenka has won the last four times she has been paired up against Vondrousova. None of their previous battles has been on clay but this will do little to dampen her spirits. She looked shaky throughout the match that was eventually awarded to her following Badosa’s retirement in the third set. Sabalenka has had a difficult last few weeks following the tragic death of her boyfriend.
