Manchester City vs Manchester United Prediction & Betting Tips - Premier League

by Ian John | in Premier League Prediction

This weekend it is the Manchester derby, rampant Manchester City take on Manchester United in what is always one of the Premier League's most exciting local rivalries. Second placed City come into the game unbeaten in their last 11 Premier League games, dropping just four points in that hugely impressive run. United have lost just one of their last five games, winning the other four, but the Red Devils have lost 10 games already this season, including last weekend's 2-1 home defeat to Fulham.

Manchester City - Manchester United: Form Analysis

Manchester City come into this fixture on an 18-game unbeaten run, during which they have won the FIFA Club World Cup and also reached the FA Cup Quarter Finals (where they will face Newcastle at the Etihad) after a 6-2 win at Luton in midweek. Erling Haaland scored five of those goals, four of them created by Kevin De Bruyne, a stat which only emphasises how crucial the two players are to this ultra-talented team. In contrast to that, in the Premier League, City have managed just three goals in their past three games, but they picked up seven points from those matches. City remain second in the table, a point behind Liverpool after 26 games and they are unbeaten at home this season, winning nine and drawing four of their 13 matches. City have only failed to score in two games this season, both 1-0 away defeats to Arsenal and Aston Villa. They face a crucial run of games where they face United, Liverpool, Arsenal and then Aston Villa in successive Premier League games.

Manchester United are currently sixth in the Premier League table with 44 points from their 26 games, but they are eight points off the top four. Their recent string of four wins came to an abrubt end last weekend when Fulham scored an injury time winner to defeat them 2-1 at Old Trafford. That loss means United's home and away form is almost identical, winning 7, drawing 1 and losing 5 both at home and on the road. One positive for Erik Ten Hag's team is that they have won their last three away games at Wolves, Aston Villa and Luton Town. They will also know that they won this corresponding fixture last season, earning a 2-1 win thanks to late strikes from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford. Jack Grealish had put City ahead in that game. One defeat in their last six is United's best league form of the season so far.

Manchester City & Manchester United Squad Analysis

Manchester City have an almost clean bill of health heading into what will be a crucial run of fixtures over the coming weeks. There are just two main injury concerns for City for the Manchester derby. Jack Grealish will definitely be out as he has an occurrence of his groin injury and no date has been set for his return. There could be better news for central defender Josko Gvardiol who is back in training with the first team after an ankle injury. Pep Guardiola is unlikely to rush the Croatian back into the first team, so he may have to settle for a place on the bench if he is fit enough to be considered. Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland have been hugely impressive since their return from injury, but the great form of Phil Foden has been one of the standout factors in Manchester City's season so far.

Erik Ten Hag has a number of players that are ruled out or doubtful for the game with City this weekend. Long-term absentees Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez are all still some way off returning to action, while the game comes too soon for Tyrell Malacia, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Mason Mount, who are reportedly set to return some time in mid-March. The biggest blow has been the loss of Rasmus Hojliund for two to three weeks. The Danish striker had been in superb form before his injury and his absence will be a big blow to United in this game. Defender Harry Maguire is also a major doubt after missing the FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest in midweek, with his chances of playing rated doubtful at best. Hojlund's absence will put greater pressure on Alejandro Garnacho, the young Argentinean winger who has been one of the bright spots for United this season along with midfielder Kobie Mainoo.

Manchester City - Manchester United Key Points

  1. City have scored in every home game this season. They are unbeaten at the Etihad in all competitions this season. They have won eight and drawn one of their last nine Premier League games. However, four of their five draws this season have come in home games. (v Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Tottenham & Liverpool).
  2. United have won four and lost one of their last five games, three of those wins coming on the road.
  3. Both teams have scored in six of Manchester City's last ten games in all competitions. Over 2.5 Goals has been scored in just five of those games however.
  4. Seven of Manchester United's last eight games have seen both team's score. All eight games have seen Over 2.5 goals scored.
  5. The last five games between these two teams have produced 23 goals, City scoring 16 to United's seven. Both teams have scored in four of those games and Over 2.5 Goals have been scored in all five.
  6. The teams met earlier in the season at Old Trafford, with Manchester City winning comfortably 3-0 thanks to a double from Erling Haaland and a Phil Foden strike.

Our Manchester City vs Manchester United Prediction

There is a saying that form goes out of the window in derby games, but for this Manchester City v Manchester United clash, it is hard to see that being the case. City, as they have done in several of the recent seasons, have hit top gear as we head into the latter stages of the season and their current form is simply exceptional. United's recent form was also solid until they were beaten by Fulham last weekend. Both won in the FA Cup in midweek ahead of this fixture, and they avoided each othe in the draw, but for this game, our prediction is for City to win and both teams to score.

Manchester City vs Manchester United - Other Interesting Predictions

Phil Foden (Manchester City) to score at any time

The England starlet has been arguably Manchester City's most consistent player this season assisting with seven goals and scoring nine himself. He has made a position in the team his own on the back of his consistent performances and he has a great goalscoring record against United, scoring in the 3-0 win this season and a hat-trick in the 6-3 home win last season. With City finding their scoring boots in midweek, and Foden not on the scoresheet, our second prediction is for Foden to get a goal against United this weekend.

Manchester City vs Manchester United match : Frequently asked questions

Andy Madley is the official that will take charge of the Manchester City v Manchester United clash at the Etihad this coming weekend.

Mr Madley has officiated in 16 Premier League games this season, awarding 74 yellow cards (4.63 per game) and just two red cards.

He is no stranger to either club, having refereed them both twice already this season. He took charge of Manchester City's 3-1 win at West Ham in September and their recent 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea.  He also officiated United's recent 3-0 win over West Ham and the Red Devil's 2-1 win at home to Brentford back in October.

Nick Hopton and Ian Hussin will be his assistant referees in the Manchester derby, with Darren England taking on fourth official duties. Stuart Attwell will be the VAR official, assisted by Lee Betts.

Despite City's dominance in this fixture over recent times, it is Manchester United who still have the better of things in the head-to-head record between the two clubs.

They have met 191 times over the years, with their first game taking place back in October 1891. Since then United have won 78 games against their rivals, compared to 60 for Manchester City with 53 matches between the two finishing as a draw.

However, in recent years, City have had much the better of the fixture, winning six of the last eight games between the two since November 2021. In those 8 matches City have scored 20 goals, compared to just 9 for Manchester United.

The Manchester derby between Manchester City and Manchester United kicks off at 3.30pm on Sunday 3rd March.
