Manchester City vs FC Copenhagen Prediction & Betting Tips - Champions League

by Ian John | in Champions League Prediction

Manchester City host FC Copenhagen in the second leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie, with the Citizens holding a comfortable 3-1 lead from the first leg in Copenhagen. Pep Guardiola's men won this trophy for the first time last season and have made a hugely impressive start of their defence of the title, with seven wins from seven games so far in the tournament. Copenhagen have lost on their only two previous visits to the Etihad Stadium and this fixture looks like being an incredibly difficult one for them given the advantage the home side hold in the match.

Manchester City - FC Copenhagen: Form Analysis

Manchester City come into this game in incredible form. They are not just 19 games unbeaten in all competitions, but in the Champions League, they have gone 20 games unbeaten since the start of their winning campaign last year in this competition. Drawing six games, winning 14. They put right a 1-1 draw with Chelsea a couple of weeks ago by thrashing Luton Town 6-2 in their FA Cup Fifth Round tie, to set up a quarterfinal with Newcastle United and then started off a crucial run of games in the League with a 3-1 victory over Manchester United at the weekend, coming from a goal down to clinch the win with another outstanding second half performance.

Copenhagen's form of late hasn't been that great with three defeats in their last five and a 2-0 reverse at Midtjyland at the weekend seeing their opponents head to the top of the Danish Superliga on the back of that victory. The Danish side has won against a Manchester side this season, a 4-3 win over Manchester United in the Group Stage seeing them earn a shot in the Round of 16 but this is a very different task against a much better team and the fact that they are already 3-1 down from the first leg only makes it even more difficult. The Danes have shown some real grit and determination in this competition this season. However that may not be enough to keep them from getting a bit of a chasing by City at the Etihad on Wednesday night.

Manchester City & FC Copenhagen Squad Analysis

Manchester City only have one injury absentee for the game at the Etihad this week. England star Jack Grealish returned from an injury sustained in the first leg in Copenhagen away to Fulham last week but the injury recurred and it means that the England star is set for an extended spell on the sidelines and may not return until late March or early April. Pep Guardiola will be happy to see his players come through the Manchester derby unscathed, with Phil Foden once again catching the eye with a double strike against United, following on from the winner he hit against Brentford a couple of weeks ago.

Copenhagen boss Jacob Neestrup heads into the second leg against Manchester City with severe doubts over the participation of three of his players through injury. Goalkeeper Theo Sander, Midfielder Lukas Lerager and defender Davit Khocholava are all out for the game and there is also a concern that Oscar Hojlund could miss the game too. There are some familiar names that Neestrup can call upon including big Danish striker Andreas Cornelius, ex-Southampton winger Mohamed Elyounoussi and former Liverpool youth goalkeeper Kamil Grabara. Men to watch include midfielder Roony Bardghji, who scored the winner against Manchester United earlier this season, as well as winger Elias Achouri.

Manchester City - FC Copenhagen Key Points

  1. The Citizens are unbeaten at home this season in all competitions, winning 13 and drawing four of their League and Champions League home matches.
  2. Copenhagen come into this match having lost three of their last five games and they lie 3rd in the Danish Superliga table.
  3. Man City have scored in every home game they have played this season in the league and Champions League, while also netting three goals in seven successive Champions League games.
  4. Manchester City are the only team along with Real Madrid to have won all seven of their Champions League games in 2023/24. The Citizens average 4.14 goals per game in Europe this season and both teams have scored in 86% of their matches.
  5. The teams have met five times previously. Copenhagen have never beaten Manchester City but have drawn with them twice at home. City have won both games at home against Copenhagen (2-1 and 5-0) as well as the 3-1 win from the first leg of this tie in the Danish capital.

Our Manchester City vs FC Copenhagen Prediction

Given their big lead from the first leg, Manchester City could probably opt to sit back and take it easy in this game, but that just isn't Pep Guardiola's style. City have scored at least three goals in all three of their Champions League home games this season and also grabbed three against Manchester United at the weekend. Copenhagen are tricky opponents and could grab a consolation against this City backline, which isn't the tightest. Our prediction for Man City v Copenhagen is for City to win and Over 3.5 Goals to be scored.

Phil Foden (Manchester City) to Score at Any Time

Outside of Rodri, no player has had a bigger impact for Manchester City this season over the full length of the season as Phil Foden. His double against Manchester United at the weekend was key in putting City back in control of a game that they were trailing in. The England man has been in great form of late in front of goal too scoring the third goal in the first leg opf this tie, as well as the winner against Brentford in addition to his brace against United. So our second prediction here is for Phil Foden to score at any time in the game.

In the first leg of this tie, Manchester City earned a comfortable 3-1 win at the Parken Stadion in Copenhagen to take a commanding lead into the second leg in Manchester.

Belgium superstar Kevin De Bruyne gave Manchester City the lead after just 10 minutes, but City were set back a few minutes later when Jack Grealish was forced off through an injury with Jeremie Doku coming on to replace him.

Shortly after the change the home side fought back and levelled when Magnus Mattsson took full advantage of an Ederson mistake, firing the ball into the top corner after Elyounoussi's shot from Ederson's poor clearance as blocked.

However just before the half time interval, City went back in front when a deflection off Mattsson fell into the path of Bernardo Silva who cleverly shot home using the outside of his foot.

City dominated the rest of the game but it took until added time for them to add a third when Phil Foden slammed home De Bruyne's cut back with virtually the final kick of the match.
