Manchester City vs Aston Villa Prediction & Betting Tips - Premier League

by Ian John | in Premier League Prediction

Manchester City host Aston Villa in another massively important game in the Premier League on Wednesday night (kick off 8.15pm) for both teams. City currently lie third in the table, a point behind Arsenal and three behind Liverpool. Villa are fourth five points behind City, three ahead of Spurs, but having played a game more. City remain unbeaten in their last 23 games, but have drawn their last two EPL matches (with Liverpool and Arsenal). Villa will be hoping they can get a repeat of their 1-0 victory over Manchester City earlier in the season at Villa Park.

Manchester City - Aston Villa: Form Analysis

Manchester City's 0-0 draw with Arsenal on Sunday was not a bad result, but it was their second draw in a row and that means that with Liverpool beating Brighton, Jurgen Klopp's team are now three points clear of City and with a better goal difference. That makes this game a must-win one for the Citizens who are unbeaten in their last 23 games in all competitions. In fact, the last team to beat them was Aston Villa back in early December. Goals have become somewhat scarce in recent Premier League games for City. They have scored more than once on just one occasion in their last six EPL games (the 3-1 win over Manchester United), scoring once against Chelsea, Brentford, Bournemouth and Liverpool and failing to find the net on Sunday against the Gunners. City have not lost a home Premier League game to Villa since September 2012, winning all the games at the Etihad between the two teams since.

Since losing 4-0 at home to Tottenham, Aston Villa have bounced back well. They beat Ajax 4-0 at Villa Park, drew 1-1 away at West Ham and then defeated local rivals Wolves on Saturday evening 2-0 thanks to goals from Moussia Diaby and Ezri Konsa. The win saw them remain fourth in the table, three points ahead of Tottenham and eleven in front of Manchester United, both of whom have a game in hand. Villa have been in solid form of late, winning three of their last five and that defeat to Spurs is the only blemish on their record in that spell of results. However, having not picked up a point at the Etihad in the last 11 years in the league, this is going to be a very tough ask for the visitors on Wednesday night.

Manchester City & Aston Villa Squad Analysis

Manchester City will still be without Kyle Walker, who is out at least for this game and may yet be out a while longer. However goalkeeper Ederson, who has been absent with a thigh injury for a while, could be back in contention to start against Villa. One injury concern could be Nathan Ake, who hobbled off in the game against Arsenal at the weekend and had to be replaced by Rico Lewis at right full-back. Lewis could deputise if Ake cannot play, or Pep could elect to play a back three, with John Stones coming into midfield. Stones was initially a doubt for the weekend game against Arsenal but did make the bench, although he did not feature in the draw. City have been very solid defensively of late with both Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol impressing at the back.

Villa come into this game hoping that midfielder Jacob Ramsey will be fit for the game. The young England midfielder is reckoned to be a 50/50 chance to be fit enough to play and he may well be needed especially given that John McGinn will serve the second of his two game suspension in this match. Polish international Matty Cash came back from international duty with a thigh injury and will likely be out until mid-April at the earliest. Villa also have long-term absentees Tyrone Mings, Emi Buendia and Boubacar Kamara out until at least next season and maybe nearer Christmas in the case of Kamara. Striker Ollie Watkins has been in great form for the Villains in recent games along with Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz.

Manchester City - Aston Villa Key Points

  1. Man City are unbeaten in their last 23 games, however they have drawn their last two in the Premier League and have scored just seven goals in their last six Premier League games.
  2. Aston Villa are in good form away from home. They have not been beaten in any of their last five away games, winning three and drawing two. Scoring 11 goals and conceding just four in that run.
  3. There have been Over 2.5 Goals in just four of Manchester City's last 11 games and just once in their last seven Premier League games.
  4. Seven of Villa's last nine games have seen Over 2.5 goals, while six of those nine games also saw both teams score.
  5. Aston Villa landed their first win over Manchester City in ten years when defeating them 1-0 in early December 2023 in the Premier League. That remains Man City's last defeat in all competitions.

Our Manchester City vs Aston Villa Prediction

It is fair to say that this Man City v Aston Villa clash in the Premier League on Wednesday is a huge one for both teams. City have been struggling for goals, but excellent defensively in recent games, whereas Villa have found goals easier to come by, but have struggled against teams they have faced in the top half (drawing with West Ham, losing to Spurs and Manchester United and Newcastle). City know a win is a must to keep up with Liverpool and Arsenal and the data suggests they should get it, even if it is a close one. Our prediction is for Manchester City to win to nil (or both teams to score - no).

Manchester City vs Aston Villa - Other Interesting Predictions

Under 2.5 Goals

We have said that Manchester City have struggled for goals of late, but have looked very solid defensively. The last game between these two teams was very tight and decided by a single goal. I expect something very similar at the Etihad on Wednesday night too. As such, our second prediction here is for Under 2.5 Goals to be scored in the game.
