To advance to this round, Samsonova had to battle through three sets against Naomi Osaka. Her fifth win of the season ended a run of four successive defeats. Samsonova, who defeated Keys the first time they met in 2021 in Berlin, is having a turbulent year. She has lost nine times in 14 outings and only once has she won multiple matches at an event. Advancing to this round has moved her up one place to 16th in the live ranking.
