Luton Town vs Manchester United Prediction & Betting Tips - Premier League

by Ian John | in Premier League Prediction

Luton Town host Manchester United in the late kick off on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League. The Hatters come into this game on the back of a disappointing home loss to another United, Sheffield, last weekend. In contrast Erik Ten Hag's Red Devils have won five of their last six in all competitions and have moved up to 6th in the Premier League, winning all of their last four away games in all competitions. They defeated Aston Villa 2-1 at Villa Park last weekend, Rasmus Hojlund and Scott McTominay scoring the key goals.

Luton Town - Manchester United: Form Analysis

Last weekend's defeat for Luton was a real blow for the Hatters. With Everton losing, a win would have put them four clear of the Toffes and saw them leapfrog Nottingham Forest into the table. However that 3-1 defeat saw a three-game unbeaten run in the league come to a screeching halt. The Hatters have won just one of their last five games and their home record is the third worst in the division, with just 11 points collected at home. The Hatters have lost three of their last five home games in the league and that will be a worry for manager Rob Edwards as he seeks to keep his team in the top flight. On the more side, their 18 goals scored at home matches the totals of Man Utd and West Ham.

After struggling on the road for a large percentage of the season, Manchester United have won their last two away games in the Premier League and in dramatic fashion too. Kobie Mainoo's 97th minute strike giving the Red Devils a 4-3 win at Wolves, before Scott McTominay's late header won the game last week at Aston Villa. Both those wins, against teams who have traditionally been hard to beat at home will have given United real confidence heading into this game. That win moved United five points behind Villa and six behind fourth placed Spurs in the table.

Luton Town & Manchester United Squad Analysis

Luton will be without long term casualties Tom Lockyer, who has had an ICD fitted and is now undergoing rehab from home and Marvelous Nakamba, who has picked up a nasty knee injury and who will be out for months, likely until the end of the season according to Hatters manager Rob Edwards. Daiki Hashioka is close to a return, as is Mads Andersen but the game with Manchester United may come a little too soon for both players. The visitors will have to watch Luton's Ross Barkley in midfield, with the former Everton and Chelsea man finding his best form for Luton and striker Elijah Adebayo has been amongst the goals of late, scoring a hat-trick against Brighton in their 4-0 win .

Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag is hopeful that left back Luke Shaw will be fit for the game on Sunday after he was taken off as a precaution in their win at Aston Villa last weekend. However a number of other United stars will be absent including long-term absentees Lisandro Martinez (Knee) and Anthony Martial (Groin). The game is also too soon for Mason Mount, Aaron Wan Bissaka and Tyrell Malacia who have all had attempted return dates of mid-March put on their recovery from a variety of injuries. Rasmus Hojlund has now scored in all his last five Premier League games for United, while Scott McTominay's fine goalscoring form means he is in line to earn a starting role in the game at the weekend.

Luton Town - Manchester United Key Points

  1. Luton have won one, drawn two and lost two of their last five Premier League games.
  2. Manchester United have won all their last three Premier League games. They have scored 9 goals in those games, conceding four.
  3. Four of Luton's last five Premier League games have seen Over 3.5 Goals scored. Both teams have scored in four of those five games too.
  4. Both teams have scored in six of Manchester United's last eight games in all competitions.
  5. Manchester United have won 10 of their last 11 games against Luton, including a 1-0 win at Old Trafford back in November last year. Luton failed to score in 7 of those 11 games.

Our Luton Town vs Manchester United Prediction

Luton will hope that Manchester United's recent fine away form will end at Kenilworth Road, but in truth it looks unlikely. With Rasmus Hojlund now scoring in his last five starts for United and the Red Devils winning three in a row, they are rightly regarded as the favorites to land the win here. Ross Barkley could be a threat to them though, but even so, I would still expect the visitors to earn the victory here. Our prediction for Luton vs Man Utd is for Manchester United to win and both teams to score.

Luton Town vs Manchester United - Other Interesting Predictions

Rasmus Hojlund (Manchester United) to score first

Manchester United's Danish striker struggled initially after his big-money move from Atalanta, but recently the youngster has formed a good triumvirate in attack with Garnacho and Rashford and he looks a good bet to be the man who gets United off the mark in this game given his record of 5 goals in his last 5 games. He's our first goalscorer pick as out second prediction for Luton v Man Utd.

Casemiro (Manchester United) to be shown a yellow card

Casemiro has played in just 11 games for Manchester United this season, and he has only been booked in three, which is an improvement from his disciplinary record last season. He will be in a very combative midfield in this game though and I think he could have trouble getting to grips with Ross Barkley and as such, I think he is a solid pick for our third bet in terms of him picking up a yellow card in the game.

Luton Town vs Manchester United match : Frequently asked questions

Luton and Manchester United have met 41 times in their history. The first game coming in 1897, when Manchester United were called Newton Heath and it ended in a 2-1 win for Luton Town.

However, victories are thin on the ground for the Hatters in this fixture. In those 41 games, Luton have won just four, whereas Manchester United have won 30, with seven draws between the two teams.

The biggest win in the fixture is 5-0, which has been achieved four times by Manchester United, the last in September 1991. In fact, Manchester United have not lost a game to Luton Town since a 2-1 defeat at Kenilworth Road in March 1987. Three of their four defeats at Luton have come on the road.

The teams have only met twice this century, United winning 3-0 at Kenilworth Road in the League Cup in September 2020 and then also winning in the Premier League earlier this season in a 1-0 win at Old Trafford thanks to a goal from Victor Lindelof.

Weather reports suggest that by Sunday afternoon, the weather in Bedfordshire is likely to be cloudy, with a chance of rain showers. It will not be particularly windy however and the temperature will be relatively mild at around 9 to 11 degrees centigrade, a couple of degrees above the average for this time of the year.

PGMOL have appointed David Coote as the referee for the Luton Town v Manchester United game on Sunday, kick off 4.30pm.

It will be Coote's 11th game officiating in the Premier League this season and he has awarded 48 yellow cards and three red cards in those previous 10 games so far this season.

It will be the first time that Mr Coote has officiated a Manchester United game this season, but he has refereed a Luton game previously, however the Hatters won't remember it fondly as they were beaten 4-1 by Brighton in that game.

Simon Bennett and Tim Wood will be the assistant referees at Kenilworth Road, with Tom Bramall the fourth official. Aussie Jarred Gillett will be the VAR official with Marc Perry assisting.
