The LA Lakers are the defending champions in the NBA but all is not going well for them at present. They host the Pacific Division leaders Phoenix Suns and could do with a win after a poor run of form. They are seventh overall in the Western Conference and that would take them into the play-ins, not directly into the play-offs. The Lakers are two wins behind the Portland Trail Blazers who currently occupy sixth place and beat the Lakers in their last match. They are only third in the Pacific Division with a 37-30 season record. That's way behind the Suns who have won 48 of their 67 matches this season. The Lakers have only won one of their last five matches with the last two both being lost. Home form has seen them lose 15 matches this season. Three in a row had been lost before a narrow four-point win over the Denver Nuggets.

Only Utah Jazz are above the Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference table. They have a three win lead over the LA Clippers in the Pacific Division, a win here will be another step towards winning the division for the first time since the 2006/07 season. 22 of their 32 matches on the road this season have been won, that's more than any other team in the NBA this season. They have won four of their last five matches and on the road had won three in a row before losing at the Atlanta Hawks who top the Southeast Division in the Eastern Conference.
