Liverpool vs Sparta Prague Prediction & Betting Tips - Europa League

by Ian John | in Europa League Prediction

Liverpool host Sparta Prague in the second leg of their Europa League Round of 16 tie at Anfield on Thursday. The Reds hold a comprehensive 5-1 lead from the game in the Czech capital a week ago, which makes this game at Anfield almost a formality. With a key FA Cup game at the weekend against Manchester United, Jurgen Klopp is likely to remain key players for this game. For Sparta Prague, it is a chance at redemption after losing 5-1 to the Reds last week and then 4-0 at Viktoria Plzen at the weekend.

Liverpool - Sparta Prague: Form Analysis

With a four goal lead and the home leg to play, you can expect Jurgen Klopp to rotate a number of players who played in the weekend's 1-1 draw with Manchester City. That means players like Darwin Nunez, Virgil Van Dijk, Mo Salah, Dominic Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, Alexis MacAllister and Andy Robertson could be rested for this game. The Reds come into the game unbeaten at Anfield and even with a team packed with youngsters, should still be confident of landing a win. The draw with Manchester City knocked Liverpool off the top of the Premier League table on goal difference but they have still won eight of the last 10, drawing one and losing just the one. That in the midst of a horrific injury crisis is remarkable by the Red Machine.

Sparta Prague manager Brian Priske stated his team were better value than the 5-1 defeat they suffered at Liverpool's hands last week suggested. He also bravely suggested his team will once again play an attacking game against the Reds at Anfield in the second leg. It is a brave call, especially seeing as they followed the big defeat to Liverpool with a 4-0 loss to Viktoria Plzen in the league. That now makes it three games without a win for Sparta, and their place at the top of the Czechia League Table is looking far less secure as a result. Priske does have a point in that Liverpool were very clinical in that first game, but it would be nothing short of incredible if Sparta can make a real game of this in the second leg.

Liverpool & Sparta Prague Squad Analysis

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp already knows that Alisson, Joel Matip, Ryan Gravenberch, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Diogo Jota, Curtis Jones and Thiago will all be absent for the game through injury. French defender Ibrahima Konate also missed the game with Manchester City, while Mo Salah was only fit enough to make the bench. Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai started, but the likelihood is they will be rested by Klopp with youngsters such as Bobby Clarke, Lewis Koumas, Jayden Danns and James McDonell likely to be given a chance. Cody Gakpo should start after being substitute against City, as should Kostas Tsimikas. Alexis MacAllister had his best game for Liverpool against City at the weekend, but the Argentinean may be another player to start from the bench as Klopp rotates his squad given the big lead his team have from the first leg.

Sparta Prague manager Brian Priske will be without two players for the Europa League second leg tie with Liverpool at Anfield. Long-term absentee right back Andreas Vindheim remains out and will likely not feature this season. Asger Sorensen picked up a hamstring injury before the game with Liverpool and also sat out the loss to Viktoria Plzen at the weekend and he is unlikely to be fit to play in the second leg either. Should Sparta pull off a miracle comeback, Kaan Kairinen in midfield will need to be careful as he is just one booking away from a suspension that would rule him out of the quarterfinal first leg. That should be academic though given what happened in the first leg in Prague.

Liverpool - Sparta Prague Key Points

  1. Liverpool are unbeaten at home at Anfield this season, winning all their games at home except for three draws in the Premier League against Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City.
  2. Sparta Prague have not won any of their last three games, drawing with Slavia 0-0, before losing to Liverpool 5-1 and they then lost 4-0 away to Viktoria Plzen at the weekend.
  3. Cody Gakpo has scored twice and assisted in one goal in the Europa League so far for Liverpool. However of the four players that have scored more often in the tournament for Liverpool, only Luis Diaz is likely to start the second leg tie at Anfield.
  4. Both teams have scored in six of Sparta Prague's last eight games. Similarly, both teams have found the net in 9 of Liverpool's last 12 games.
  5. Liverpool are very likely to rest key players for this game as they played Manchester City last weekend at Anfield (drawing 1-1) and will face a trip to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United in the FA Cup in this coming weekend.

Our Liverpool vs Sparta Prague Prediction

After a comfortable victory in the first leg, Liverpool won't be in any danger of going out of this tournament here and should cement their place with a win. However, the odds on backing them for any kind of win, even if it is one with a condition such as BTTS or Over 2.5 Goals, are still very short. What will happen for sure, is that Jurgen Klopp will rotate some players who played against Manchester City at the weekend and that means striker Cody Gakpo should start. So, our prediction for Liverpool v Sparta Prague is Cody Gakpo to score at any time.

Liverpool vs Sparta Prague - Other Interesting Predictions

Liverpool to win and Both Teams to Score

Liverpool have conceded a goal in nine of their last 12 games in all competitions and they have had a tendency to go a goal behind in games, before striking back to claim a win, or a point as was the case on Sunday against Manchester City. So, with Sparta Prague needing to attack and seemingly set to do so, I think they could score at least once against what will be an inexperienced Liverpool team. However, despite that, the home side should still take the win here. Our second prediction is for Liverpool to win and both teams to score.

Liverpool vs Sparta Prague match : Frequently asked questions

At kick off time (8pm) in Liverpool on Thursday 14th March, the weather is expected to be somewhat changeable with drizzle and showers expected throughout the day on Merseyside and into the evening.

However, the heavy cloud cover will keep temperatures up across Merseyside with temperatures expected to be around 11 degrees centigrade at kick off time, which is slightly above the usual temperature for this time of the year in this part of the UK.

The game took place in the Czechia capital on Thursday last week and saw Liverpool emerge with a very comfortable 5-1 victory against the hosts, despite playing a team that included a number of younger and inexperienced players.

The Reds got off to a great start when Alexis Mac Allister converted a penalty on seven minutes and then Darwin Nunez scored two outstanding goals on 25 and 45+3 minutes to send in the visitors with a three goal advantage at the interval.

To be fair to Sparta Prague, that scoreline was a little harsh, but the home side struck back immediately after half time when Conor Bradley could only turn a cross into his own net after 46 minutes to make the scoreline 3-1 in favor of Liverpool .

Luis Diaz restored Liverpool's three goal lead in the 53rd minute and Mo Salah had a goal disallowed for offside before Dominik Szoboszlai rattled home the fifth in the 90+4th minute of the game.

TNT Sports, formerly BT Sports, will be showing the action from Anfield live on Thursday night as they cover all Europa League action for fans across the United Kingdom.
