Qinwen Zheng is back on the court after surgery and has advanced to the Beijing Open third round. She will face Linda Noskova on Monday in what will be their third career meeting. The winner here will advance to meet Zeynep Sonmez or Anastasia Potapova. Read on for our prediction.
Noskova is returning to Beijing after her debut in 2023 only ended in the first round. Back then she was scheduled to take on Jelena Ostapenko in the second round, but she pulled out.
The 26th seed has now bettered her previous performance after a first-round bye and beating wildcard Xiyu Wang in the second. That improved her season to 30-22, leaving her 26th in the live rank. Noskova’s best this season was getting to the Prague final.
Seventh seed Zheng also got a first-round bye, and she started off with a straight-sets win over lucky loser Emiliana Arango in the second. The Chinese number one has had a season slowed by injury, and two months ago she had elbow surgery.
Beating Arango, she registered her first win since June. Zheng reached the Queen’s Club semis but then lost in the first round at Wimbledon.
She may not be operating at 100%, but her head-to-head advantage over Noskova will be among the factors motivating her. While she has compiled a 20-11 run for the season, Zheng has a 9-3 career record in WTA 1000 tournaments played in China.
