World number 72 Mayar Sherif and world number 166 Lauren Davis will meet on Wednesday at the Madrid Open. They will square off in the first round with the winner playing 25th seed Marta Kostyuk for a place in the third round. Lauren Davis is playing in Madrid with a protected ranking. The American has played only one match this year as she gradually returns to the tour after a lengthy injury absence. Before making her season debut in Charleston at the end of March, Davis had last been on the court last September. The 30-year-old is making her fourth main draw appearance in Madrid. She has twice been eliminated in the first round including last season. Davis is currently ranked 188th in the live ranking. She defeated Sherif on a hard court in Monterey three seasons ago.
Mayar Sherif defeated Davis the last time they met. This was two seasons ago on the clay surfaces in Parma. The win tied this series at 1-1. She will be hoping for a similar outcome as she seeks her first win of the season. Sherif is having a turbulent campaign and has lost all five matches she has contested. Two of those defeats have been on clay, a surface she highly favours. Before arriving to make her second appearance in Madrid, the Egyptian lost in the first round in Rouen. Sherif had a superb debut here last year and produced a quarter-final finish. The 27-year-old’s struggles this season have seen her drop to 100th in the live ranking.
