Eighth seed Max Purcell will seek his first win of the year when he takes on Kiranpal Pannu at the Auckland Open. The two will battle in the first round with the winner next playing Taro Daniel for a place in the quarterfinals. Max Purcell was defeated in the first round in Brisbane by eventual finalist Holger Rune. He played admirably against the world number eight and forced him to come from a set down to win. The momentum gained from that duel should be enough to propel him past this round. Purcell is ranked 45th in the ATP. He is a strong performer on hard courts and last season registered 45 of his total 52 victories on the surface.
Kiranpal Pannu made his tour debut last season in this very tournament. He was defeated in the first round in straight sets by eventual champion Richard Gasquet. He played in one other tour tournament after that but was also bundled out in the first round. Pannu is making his season debut and last took to the court a month ago in Wellington in the ITF circuit. He is currently ranked 714th in the ATP. Pannu has in his career playing in the lower levels, compiled a 57-38 record on hard courts.
