Jaqueline Cristian and Diane Parry, both unseeded, will battle in the first round of the Miami Open. The winner will then advance to play 11th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia for a place in the third round. Jaqueline Cristian is having a turbulent season and has struggled especially on hard courts. She has lost nine times in 15 matches contested with six of those coming on hard courts. The Romanian has managed just one win on the surface. But as she has the head-to-head advantage over Parry, she will be confident of a winning start. Cristian has defeated Parry in both their previous encounters which were played in the ITF circuit. Currently down to 83rd in the live ranking, Cristian is coming off a qualifying round exit at Indian Wells. This is her main draw debut in Miami.

Diane Parry is also debuting in the main draw of this WTA 1000 event. She has played here once before, in 2022, and fell in the first round of qualifying. With how well she has performed this season, the Frenchwoman will be confident of a win here. Parry has compiled an 11-6 record thus far and all 17 fixtures have taken place on hard courts. She is coming off a fourth-round exit at Indian Wells. This was her best-ever result at a 1000 tournament and was her first main draw appearance at such an event. Parry also made the third round in Melbourne and was a quarterfinalist in Austin as well as Auckland. She arrives here having moved up four places in the live ranking to a new career-high placing of world number 50.
