Italy will take on Slovakia in Winter Olympics Ice Hockey action on Friday. The pair are part of Group B, so let’s get stuck in to make a prediction on the match.
Italy took on Sweden in their opening game on Wednesday, giving a team that on paper looked an awful lot stronger a bit of a fright. Not only did they take an early lead but they battled back to level things up when Sweden had gone 2-1 in front.
They ultimately fell 2-5 as the stronger team got on top as the game wore on, but it was still a solid effort from the home team. That might just be what gets them through this tournament.
The opening game of Slovakia’s tournament came against Finland. It was a game that they took control of early, with a pair of goals from Juraj Slafkovsky of the Montreal Canadiens. A late power play goal and then an empty netter took the game for Slovakia.
They were comprehensively outshot by the Fins, so they will need to sharpen things up as the tournament progresses and they have to take on stronger teams. Slafkovsky was the star for them in Beijing as well on their way to the semi-finals.
