Schalke 04 travel to Holstein Kiel for matchday two of the Bundesliga 2 on Sunday. Dimitros Grammozis’ side kickstarted their campaign to earn promotion back to the top division with a 3-1 loss to Hamburg. Schalke 04 had a lacklustre previous season and were relegated from the Bundesliga for the first time in 33 years. Holstein Kiel, on the contrary, must be rueing their missed opportunity to earn promotion to the Bundesliga at the end of their previous season. Ole Werner’s side finished third in Bundesliga 2 and were pitted against FC Koln of the Bundesliga in the promotion play-off where they were outplayed comprehensively and suffered a 5-2 loss on aggregate. Kiel had won the first leg with a slender margin of 1-0 before Koln registered a dominating 5-1 victory. Kiel have also begun their new season with a loss to FC St. Pauli with a 3-0 scoreline. They had played four pre-season games prior to the Bundesliga 2 opener, winning and losing once; and drawing twice.
