by Daniel Ngulu in Tennis Predictions
Top seed Holger Rune and the unseeded Roman Safiullin will square off in the semifinals of the Brisbane International tournament. The winner will then battle either Grigor Dimitrov, Rafael Nadal or Jordan Thompson in the final. Holger Rune is having quite the debut tournament in Brisbane and is now on the verge of another tour final. Last year he contested seven semifinals and won three of them which eventually resulted in one title. The Dane, ranked eighth in the ATP, defeated crowd favourite James Duckworth in straight sets in the last round. It was his first 2-0 victory of the tournament and saw him give up eight games.
Roman Safiullin has only once in his career played in a tour final. This happened last year in Chengdu. He has the chance to do so again here but will require a big performance. But having defeated a top-two player at the tail end of last season, the Russian will not be fazed here. Safiullin is also coming off his first straight sets win of the tournament. He battled for two hours to defeat the relentless Matteo Arnaldi by the loss of eight games. The 26-year-old won 41 matches last season and this allowed him to advance to a career-high ranking of world number 39.
