The Currie Cup round six gets underway this week, and in the final match of a jam-packed weekend, we will see the Golden Lions welcome the Griquas to Ellis Park Stadium for what should be an entertaining duel on Sunday afternoon. The hosts are currently in fifth place in the standings, with 13 points after their first five matches, seven points behind the tournament leaders, the Pumas, and three points above their opponents. The Lions Currie Cup campaign got off to a very poor start, with back-to-back losses in their two opening fixtures against Western Province and the Pumas. However, with a slight swing in the fixtures, the Lions bounced back well in their third match beating the Griffons 41-26 and following up with a very impressive display over the Sharks, coming out 34-22 winners after 80 minutes. Unfortunately, they were unable to keep the momentum going in their last match against the rampant Cheetahs, who put them to the sword running away as 52-15 winners. Up against a side that has been struggling for rhythm in this tournament, the hosts will fancy their chances in this one and will likely be eyeing up a bonus point as well. 

The Griquas have also found it difficult to string together a positive run of results in this year's competition and currently sit second-from-bottom, with 10 points after five matches, four points above the Griffons at the foot of the table. The visitors have managed two wins so far, both coming over the franchise sides in South Africa, the Sharks and Western Province, but came up short against the Cheetahs, Pumas, and most recently, the Blue Bulls, who they lost to by a scoreline of 40-3 last week. Unlike most of the sides in the tournament, the Griquas have already played four away matches in their first five, managing just one win while earning two bonus points. Coming up against a speedy Lions side in this one, the visitors will know that they need to work out their defensive frailties if they are to stand any chance in this match.
