The first stage of the final week of the Giro and we head into the high mountains. Since 2000, no Giro has had as many vertical metres of climbing in the final week so our prediction needs to concentrate on the mountain goat riders.

A Cat 2 and three Cat 1s await riders with the line at the top of the San Valentino. This is the time for the big favourites to hit the climbs hard and with Primoz Roglic struggling on a Cat 2 on Sunday, the pressure is on.

Isaac Del Toro has the Maglia Rosa on his back but his teammate Juan Ayuso will be looking to relieve him of it in the final week. It is going to be hugely interesting to see how the team handles the battle between the two.

A rider who was active on Stage 15 was Richard Carapaz. One of the true natural climbers in the peloton, the harder a stage gets, the more he likes it and this is going to suit him perfectly.

Other climbers like Egan Bernal and Nairo Quintana will be expected to come to the fore this week but one who might go under the radar at a huge price is Yannis Voisard. He has been growing into the tour and has previous form at the 'Baby Giro', including a win at the expense of Juan Ayuso,

Giro - Stage 16 - Giro d'Italia prediction key points

Stage 16 is 203 km in length from Piazzola Sul Brenta to San Valentino.
There are four climbs on the stage, a Cat 2 followed by three Cat 1s, including a mountaintop finish.
On Stage 9 of the ‘Baby Giro’ in 2021, Voisard won on a mountaintop finish beating Juan Ayuso (3rd overall at present) who would go on to win the overall title.
Yannie Voisard has won the Alpes Isere Tour and finished third overall in the Tour of Hungary already in his career.

The main contenders will be watching one another like hawks on the way up the final climb of the day. Del Toro, Ayuso, Carapaz, the list of potential GC winners is huge. There is a tough week ahead so this might be a day where a second level rider sneaks away on the final climb with a well-timed challenge.
