The giant killers of AFCON 2021, Gambia have another chance to extend their fairytale at the competition when they face hosts Cameroon in the quarter finals. It has been a great run for the minnows, who are only making their first appearance at the topmost competition in Africa and they will be keen on slaying another giant. They have already beaten Tunisia and Guinea in this competition and will relish the chance to add Cameroon to their list of top ranking victims. To achieve that though, they have to wade past a team backed by the home crowd, tough in defence and productive in attack. Gambia themselves haven’t managed more than a goal in this competition but credit to them for astute defending that has seen them concede just one goal in the four matches. In their last 10 matches, Gambia have scored more than a goal in just one game, a 2-0 friendly win against Niger. On the flipside, they’ve also conceded more than a goal in just one of the last 10 matches.
Cameroon have been among the top teams in the competition and have benefitted widely from the home support. They had a few uncomfortable moments in their last game but managed to hold off a stubborn Comoros, who were also making a debut at this competition. They did beat Comoros 2-1 but considering nothing seemed to be working for Comoros, the win wasn’t considered so comfortable. Comoros went to the game with a defender playing as keeper and had a defender sent off after just seven minutes. A Cameroon side disjointed for most of the game struggled to penetrate the Comoros defence and endured a lot of pressure in the final minutes. Apart from the home crowd, a big positive for Cameroon is their in-form forward, Vincent Aboubakar, who has scored in every game at the competition. He got the second against Comoros to ease the pressure and has so far managed six goals. Cameroon go to the game unbeaten in eight matches though they haven’t kept a clean sheet at this competition.
