Is this the final before the final? The first semi-final of the 2026 World Cup will see France and Spain competing to prove their status as title favourites. This match on Tuesday at Dallas Stadium gives Les Bleus a chance to make it to their third straight World Cup final, while La Roja are gunning for a first final since the 2010 tournament. Will the two European powerhouses meet expectations and deliver a high-scoring match?
France are in their eighth World Cup semi-final, with only Germany qualifying for more. With 20 World Cup wins under his belt in just 25 matches, Les Bleus’ coach Didier Deschamps is making a push to be one of the legends this tournament has seen.
Can Spain ruin that record? La Roja are the first reigning European Championship holders to reach this stage of a World Cup since Spain themselves did in 2010. One of the two top favourites for this tournament will get knocked out just before the grand finals. Who gets on that plane to New Jersey for the final? Time to dig deep and learn more about our analysis, team news, and match predictions.

France - Spain: Form Analysis
France have comfortably topped Group I with three wins, conceding just two goals. Les Bleus then defeated Sweden 3-0 in the round of 32, Paraguay 1-0 in the round of 16, and Morocco 2-0 in the quarter-finals.
Paraguay were the only team to push France hard, although the South Americans played a rough game and were not looking to win. Les Bleus are looking for a third World Cup title and have won their last seven games in a row.
Under Deschamps, France have won 20 of their 25 World Cup games.
Spain capitalised on a goalkeeper error to defeat Belgium 2-1 in the quarter-finals for a fifth win in a row since starting the tournament with a dull 0-0 draw against Cape Verde.
It was also the first goal that the Spaniards conceded in this tournament, ending a run of 649 minutes without letting one in! Crucially, La Roja have now avoided defeat in their last 36 matches (W27, D9) since March 2024, which is the longest unbeaten run in their history.

France & Spain Squad Analysis
Mbappe sparked a major scare when he was substituted against Morocco and was seen with his ankle packed with ice. However, he quickly assured it was just a minor issue. That means only Aurelien Tchouameni remains their injury concern, with the Real Madrid midfield being an unused substitute against Morocco.
Les Bleus are likely to line up in their traditional 4-2-3-1 formation with Mbappe set to lead the line. That puts Ousmane Dembele (five goals, two assists) on the right wing and Mbappe (eight goals, three assists) as France’s main scoring threats.
Michael Olise has five assists in this tournament, but none in the last two games.
Spain have managed to work around their injury issues, with Nico Williams, Victor Munoz, and Yeremy Pino still struggling to be match-fit. Coach Luis de la Fuente played Fabian Ruiz ahead of Pedri against Belgium in a tactical switch and could once again stick to the same combination.
That could see the Spaniards line up in their usual 4-2-3-1 formation with Mikel Oyarzabal playing as their lone striker. He has been their best player with four goals in this tournament, but concerns remain over starboy Lamine Yamal, who has played 405 minutes and scored just once.

Our France vs Spain Prediction
These are two teams that were the top two favourites before the tournament and would have been worthy finalists. While France played like genuine title contenders and are still the team to beat, Spain haven’t yet hit the top gear. France have an explosive frontline and can trouble the Spanish defence, which has conceded just once in this World Cup.
Spain’s possession game could push the French, and this game promises goals, which was the case in the three recent matches between these nations. That’s why our France vs Spain prediction is BTTS.
France vs Spain Alternative Predictions
France to Qualify
The recent record between these sides favours Spain, as they won three of the last four games. That, however, doesn’t go in line with how France have been dominating this tournament. They are in a third straight World Cup semifinal and look well-placed to make it to their third consecutive final. Back France to qualify.
Kylian Mbappe to Score Anytime
Kylian Mbappe has 10+ goal involvements in both of the last two World Cups and has eight goals plus three assists in this tournament. He’s in line to push hard for the Golden Boot and is in contention with Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland close behind. It is tough to look past the French superstar to go for a goal here, as he has the form to continue pushing for the top spot. Mbappe to score anytime.
