CONMEBOL’s second-tier club competition will crown a champion on Saturday as Brazilian side Fortaleza takes on Ecuador’s LDU Quito. This is Fortaleza’s first appearance in the final of this competition as they seek their first major competition win. The team from Northeast Brazil’s only biggest accomplishment up to this point was a Brazilian Serie B title that they won in 2018. It’s been a meteoric rise for Leão do Pici who have gone from second division side to continental cup finalists in the span of just five years. They come into this fixture on a losing skid after dropping back-to-back games in the Serie B. The first was a 1-0 away loss to Vasco last week which was followed up with a 2-0 away loss to Bahia on the weekend. They have a full week’s rest to get right as they gear up for the most important match in the club’s history. Fortaleza got past Atletico Mineiro in the quarter-finals before knocking out Corinthians in the semi-finals.

LDU Quito have a history in this competition, unlike their opponents. The 11-time Liga Pro winners were crowned Copa Sudamericana champions in 2009 when they overcame Fluminense in the final. Two years later they would make the final again, only to finish as the runners-up to Universidad de Chile on that occasion. They also have a Copa Libertadores title under their belt which they won in 2008. They come into this cup final off the back of a 1-0 home win over Emelec six days prior. The result extends the Ecuadorian club’s unbeaten run to five games. LDU Quito are also on an impressive run of only one defeat in the last 25 matches. Los Albos were unbeaten in their group stage phase with three wins and three draws in six matches. In the knockout stages, they overcame Ñublense, São Paulo, and Defensa y Justicia.
