England vs Belgium Prediction & Betting Tips - International Friendlies

by Ian John | in Football Predictions

Gareth Southgate's England host Belgium on Tuesday night in what has now become a real test ahead of the European Championships this summer. Both teams endured disappointing results over the weekend, England losing 1-0 at home to Brazil, while Belgium were held 0-0 by the Republic of Ireland who also missed a penalty in that game. Both Southgate and his counterpart Domenico Tedesco will know there is serious improvement needed ahead of the finals next summer. Starting with this game on Tuesday night.

England - Belgium: Form Analysis

It is fair to say that England's recent form under Gareth Southgate has been poor. Despite a 10-game unbeaten run, England were extremely poor in beating Malta 2-0 at Wembley and followed that up with an even poorer display away to North Macedonia, where they could only manage a 1-1 draw.  Then on Friday, they faced a young and vastly inexperienced Brazil team and once again struggled to create chances against what is an ordinary Brazil side that had lost their previous three games. Eventually, England lost 1-0 to a late Endrick strike, but the lack of chances created by England in that game, and how their performance tailed off when Jude Bellingham was substituted will be a real concern for Southgate and his team heading into this difficult game with Belgium.

While Belgium may have been poor against the Republic of Ireland, they still emerged with a draw to maintain their unbeaten record since the 2022 World Cup Finals. In the 10 games that have been completed (not including the abandoned game with Sweden), Belgium have won eight and drawn two of those matches recording wins over Sweden, Serbia, Germany and Austria in that run. The Belgian squad has a number of Premier League-based stars in it, including Youri Tielemans (Aston Villa), Jeremy Doku (Man City), Leandro Trossard (Arsenal) and Amadou Onana (Everton) all of whom will be well used to playing against many of this English squad. They will also be desperate to try and land their first ever win at Wembley.

England & Belgium Squad Analysis

Both these teams have been hit with a number of injuries rendering key players unavailable. For England, Gareth Southgate was unable to select all of the following due to injury - Reece James (Chelsea), Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Marc Guehi & Ebereche Eze (Crystal Palace), Nick Pope, Callum Wilson & Kieran Trippier (Newcastle), Jack Grealish (Man City), Tyrone Mings (Aston Villa). Meanwhile Harry Kane and Bikayo Saka have withdrawn from the squad due to slight injuries and will not be available for the Belgium game, while Jordan Henderson remains a doubt after missing the Brazil game, allowing Kobbie Mainoo to earn his first cap against the South Americans. Anthony Gordon's performance against Brazil was the sole bright spot for England in what was an otherwise disappointing performance.

Belgium boss Domenico Tedesco has his own injury absentees for this game with Kevin De Bruyne and Thibaut Courtois the most notable absentees through injury as the skipper and vice captain of the team. Leander Dendoncker and Romeo Lavia are two other players that missed out through injury. Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels was given the goalkeeper shirt against the Republic of Ireland and did well, saving a penalty to secure the draw in that game. Romelu lukau's 83 goals in 113 international caps is an outstanding record and the 30-year-old striker could well add to that tally for several years yet.

England - Belgium Key Points

  1. England's defeat to Brazil was their first in ten games, since losing in the 2022 World Cup Quarterfinals to France. It was also the first time England failed to score in the last 14 matches.
  2. Belgium are unbeaten in their last 12 matches (13 if you include their abandoned game with Sweden which was ruled a draw). They have conceded just two goals in their last seven games, winning six of them and drawing the other.
  3. England have conceded one goal in five of their last seven matches only keeping clean sheets against Australia and Malta.
  4. Belgium have never won a game at Wembley. Their best results being two draws in 1954 (4-4) and 1964 (2-2). All of their four most recent wins over England have come on neutral territory or at home.
  5. England have lost three of their last four against Belgium, conceding six goals, scoring just the two and both those came in their 2-1 win at Wembley in the Nations League in October 2020.

Our England vs Belgium Prediction

Make no mistake, England v Belgium on Tuesday night is a massive game for England after that defeat to Brazil. Belgium have proven to be very tough to beat in competition football over the last decade or so and the Three Lions need a morale boosting win here. However, with Belgium on a long unbeaten run themselves and defensively looking excellent, my feeling is that it is going to be hard for either side to win this game. Our prediction for England v Belgium therefore is for a draw.

Draw and Under 2.5 Goals

Having witnessed England's toothless display against Brazil, and Belgium's lacklustre showing against Ireland, it is hard to see either team being confident of scoring goals against what are generally very good defences. Given the fact both teams will want to avoid defeat, the draw looks a good bet, but I think pairing that with Under 2.5 goals in the game is a very good secondary bet.

England vs Belgium match : Frequently asked questions

England have faced Belgium 25 times in international games and the Three Lions have by far the better record of the two teams.

England have won 16 of those matches, compared to just five for Belgium with only four drawn games between the two.

However, those dominant stats are a little misleading as in the more recent games between the two teams, certainly since the late 1990s, that balance has swung very much in favour of Belgium.

In the seven games since May 1998, Belgium have won four, including beating England twice at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and then once again the last time they met in the Nations League in November 2020.

England's only wins in that period have been at Wembley in two international friendlies, and one win in the Nations League in October 2020.

Austrian referee Sebastian Gishamer will officiate the game between England and Belgium on Tuesday night at Wembley Stadium (7.45pm kick off).

He will be assisted by his assistant referees, Roland Brandner and Santino Scheiner and the fourth official Harald Lechner.

Manuel Schuttengruber will be the VAR official and he will be assisted by Walter Altmann in what is an all-Austrian officiating crew.

England's game with Belgium is an international friendly match as both teams prepare for the Euro 2024 Finals in Germany this summer. The game will be shown live on terrestrial TV in the UK on Channel 4.
