Fourth seed Emma Navarro will take on the unseeded Elina Avanesyan in the second round at the Auckland Open. The winner will then advance to play either Petra Martic or Yuan Yue in the quarterfinals. Emma Navarro got the better of Linda Fruhvirtova in the first round. She won in three sets after coming from a set down. The American will hope to keep this momentum and make this a memorable debut tournament for her. Currently ranked 31st in the WTA, a career-high, Navarro had her best season as a professional last season. She compiled a 64-24 record and contested an impressive eight challenger and ITF finals. The 22-year-old won five titles and this form allowed her to claw to her career-high world ranking.

Elina Avanesyan also started things off in Auckland with a win. The Russian defeated the wildcard Monique Barry in straight sets in the first round. Avanesyan had a poor season on outdoor hard courts last season and compiled a 7-12 record on the surface. Making a winning start on the surface here should therefore have her confident of forging forward in the tournament. She is also making her debut in Auckland. Avanesyan finished last season ranked 74th in the world and with a 31-24 record. She won one ITF title but the highlight of her season was her run to the fourth round at the French Open.
