The unseeded Daria Kasatkina and the qualifier Anna Kalinskaya will battle each other in the second round at the Adelaide International tournament. The winner will then play either Laura Siegemund or Ana Bogdan in the quarterfinals. Daria Kasatkina defeated Claire Liu in straight sets to begin her third appearance in Adelaide. She relinquished seven games against the American as she secured her third win of the season. Kasatkina finished as runner-up here last year and will be hoping to go one better this time around. The Russian is ranked 18th in the live ranking. She has won three of the four times that she has been paired up against Kalinskaya.

Anna Kalinskaya defeated fourth seed Barbora Krejcikova in three sets in the first round. It was the fourth win in five outings so far this season for the Russian. Kalinskaya, who started her season in Brisbane, won both her qualifiers here without dropping a set. She is now through to the second round here for the second successive year but has never gone past this stage. Kalinskaya is a strong performer on hard courts and has in her career thus far compiled a 133-68 record on the surface. She is currently ranked 75th in the WTA.
