Danielle Collins faces Olivia Gadecki in the first round proper of the WTA Austin 250. The American, third seed for the tournament after an impressive run to the quarterfinals in the Qatar Open last time out, had been somewhat unfortunate to face three top seeds in three tournaments in a row losing to Elise Martins at the Hobart International, Iga Swiatek at the Australian Open and then Elena Rybakina in the Abu Dhabi Open. Her luck changed in Qatar though and it is worth noting that she has already beaten the likes of Veronika Kudermetova, Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber this season. The 2022 Australian Open finalist, has won two singles titles in her career and she reached the semi-final of this tournament last year, losing to the eventual champion Marta Kostyuk.

Her opponent is qualifier Olivia Gadecki who defeated two American opponents on her way to the First Round proper. The Australian is perhaps better known as a doubles specialist, teaming up with Kimberley Birrell, but she has been steadily rising through the ranks as a singles player in recent years. Aged just 21, her current world ranking of 143rd is just shy of her best ranking of 120th since breaking into the world's top 200 at the start of 2023. Heading into the tournament she had won three of her seven singles games this season but had lost in the first round in both the Thailand Open and Australian Open in her last two singles outings.
