Two unseeded players face each other in round one of the Shanghai Masters. Christopher O'Connell takes on Damir Dzumhur in this outdoor hard court tournament. Who will progress? Time for our match prediction.

Seeded opposition will be faced by the winner in round two. namely the 23rd seed Denis Shapovalov. 

Christopher O'Connell is 109th in the live rankings and that's 42 places below his opponent. The Australian has an 18-13 record on this surface, winning only four of 17 played on clay and grass.

His recent form has seen him reach a Challenger Tour semi-final (retiring in that match) and then getting to the last eight in Chengdu. That was followed by a first round exit at the hands of Botic van de Zandschulp in Beijing.

Damir Dzumhur has shown his best form on clay and has a 9-10 record on this surface. He reached a clay court semi-final on the clay of Umag in late July. Since returning to hard courts, he has only won one out of six matches played.

His last tournament was in Tokyo when being beaten in three sets by Aleksandar Vukic. That was his fourth straight defeat on this surface. This could well go to three sets but we tip O'Connell to win.
