In a clash of contrasting playing styles, Colombia and Ghana meet in the last 32 of the 2026 World Cup on Friday in Kansas City. This is the last game of this round, and the winner of this tie between ‘Los Cafeteros’ and the ‘Black Stars’ will meet the winner of Switzerland and Algeria in the next knockout game. Are we in for an exciting match between the two underdogs?
Colombia are compensating for lost time after missing out on the last World Cup. This is the third consecutive time they have reached the knockouts in World Cup appearances and have been one of the toughest teams to breach in this edition.
Ghana are back in the World Cup knockouts for the first time since 2010 when they reached the quarter-finals. While their games haven’t been exciting for fans and neutrals alike in this edition, their counter-attacking style could be a threat for any team. Is that enough to cause an upset here? Colombia - Ghana: Form Analysis
Colombia’s late goal was controversially ruled out as they drew 0-0 against Portugal on matchday three. The result, though, was enough to see the unbeaten South Americans (W2, D1) qualify from Group K as winners.
Their defensive record stands out, as Colombia conceded just one goal in this competition and kept consecutive clean sheets. They could now keep three clean sheets for the first time ever in the World Cup competition, which is enough incentive to push for another solid defensive performance.
Colombia have conceded just two goals across their last six World Cup games.
Ghana lost 2-1 to Croatia on matchday three, but the result did nothing for their qualification, as they were already assured of a place in the last 32. With four points (W1, D1, L1), the ‘Black Stars’ were one of the best third-ranked sides in the tournament, scoring and conceding just two goals.
With an average possession of just 36.1% in the group stages, Ghana have enjoyed playing from the back and hitting on the counter. While that may give them a chance to take the game deep, a run of six defeats in the last nine games (W1, D2) nearly rules out an upset.

Colombia & Ghana Squad Analysis
Colombia have no injury concerns in the squad, although striker Luis Suarez is doubtful with a shoulder injury. There are no suspension issues either, for the South Americans.
The Colombians have lined up in their usual 4-3-3 system in their games here, although they were adept at quickly morphing into a sturdier 4-1-4-1 formation. Suarez’s unavailability may see Jhon Cordoba line up as the striker with Luis Diaz and James Rodriguez on the wings.
Ghana’s Abdul Fatawu has created two chances in just 101 minutes in this World Cup.
The ‘Black Stars’ also have a fit squad at their disposal and are likely to continue with their 4-1-4-1 formation. That could see the experienced Jordan Ayew line up as the sole striker, but all eyes will be on Manchester City’s winger Antoine Semenyo.
Semenyo is yet to score or assist, and worse still, he is yet to record a shot on target at this World Cup. Across the three group stage games, he had just three shots with an expected goal (xG) total of just 0.13.

Our Colombia vs Ghana Prediction
Colombia have an unfinished business with World Cup knockouts, having advanced just once from their previous four such games. For Ghana, this is their third knockout stage appearance, but their recent performances haven’t been inspiring. Both teams have been strong at the back, which is even more true for Ghana, who had just three shots on target in the entire World Cup.
Colombia have been one of the defensively sound teams, while Ghana have struggled to impress in the final third. That’s one of the reasons why our Colombia vs Ghana prediction is less than 2.5 goals.
Colombia vs Ghana Alternative Predictions
Colombia wins
Colombia have won each of their last four World Cup matches against African nations, although all of those came by a slender one-goal margin. Their strong defensive record in the World Cups should also play to their advantage. Back Colombia to win.
