Borussia Dortmund will be playing host to Mainz in the Bundesliga on Tuesday evening. The hosts are currently in fifth place in the league standings, while the visitors are 17th. Dortmund saw the gap between themselves and the top four widen to five points last weekend when they drew 1-1 away to Augsburg. The Black and Yellows are currently on 26 points after 15 games and ten points below league leaders Bayer Leverkusen. While their league position is lower than they would like, they did secure top spot in their Group in the Champions League following a 1-1 draw to PSG in midweek. However, that also means that BVB are winless in their last five, during which time they were also knocked out of the DFB Pokal by Stuttgart. Still, Dortmund are unbeaten in their last six matches against this opponent and are the clear favourites at the books. 

Meanwhile, after missing out on a European spot by just four points last season, 2023-24 has been something of a nightmare for Mainz. They have managed just nine points in 15 matches, level with bottom club Darmstadt and one point behind Union Berlin in the relegation playoff spot. The visitors' last match ended in a 1-0 defeat to newly promoted Heidenheim at home and marked their third consecutive match without finding the net. That result was also Mainz’s fifth consecutive match without a win. And speaking of wins, the 05ers have only recorded one this season, which is the fewest of any side in the top flight. Mainz have drawn their last five away league games and have not won in the Bundesliga on the road since mid-April. In their defence, though, the visitors have a lengthy casualty list this season.
