Aston Villa - Manchester United: Form Analysis

Aston Villa faced Manchester United at Villa Park in the late game on Sunday suffering from a little lack of consistency at the moment. Since drawing with Sheffield United just before Christmas, Villa have lost three games, drawn two and won three in all competitions. They have had a big win, a 5-0 thrashing of Sheffield United last weekend, but in their last two home games, they have suffered successive 3-1 defeats, to Newcastle in the Premier League and then against Chelsea in the FA Cup Fourth Round. Those two blips apart, Villa have been imperious at home this season, winning 9 and drawing 1 of their previous ten in the league before that defeat to Newcastle. With 30 goals scored in just 11 games too, it is also clear that this is a team that knows the way to goal when they play at Villa Park.

A win for Manchester United in this game would cut the gap on Aston Villa to five points, and would give their hopes of a top four finish a boost. They will also be confident after beating Villa 3-2 in the game at Old Trafford earlier this season and then enjoying an excellent 3-0 win over West Ham last time out. However, United's away form this season will be a real worry for manager Erik Ten Hag as they have won five, drawn one and lost five on the road, scoring just 13 goals and conceding 14. That suggests games involving Manchester United away from home are generally tight affairs. Last time out on the road, United were 4-3 winners at Wolves, their first away win in five Premier League games but that high-scoring encounter is not typical of how United have performed on the road this season and this promises to be a very tough game on Sunday.

Aston Villa & Manchester United Squad Analysis

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery may well opt to make a few changes following his team's second home defeat in a row against Chelsea. Villa were very disappointing, especially in midfield, for that game and the likes of Youri Tielemans and Boubacar Kamara may well find their place under threat with the likes of Moussa Diaby, Jacob Ramsey and Nicolo Zainolo ready to step in if called upon. Villa could also welcome back left back Lucas Digne from injury, with his chances of playing rated at 50/50. However long term absentees Emi Buendia, Tyrone Mings and Jhon Duran will all be absent and center back Ezri Konsa will also be out with a return date slated for early March for his return from a knee sprain. Villa will be linked on the goals of Ollie Watkins in these games, although midfield duo John McGinn and Douglas Luiz have also weighed in with 6 goals each this season.

After a good win last weekend over West Ham, Erik Ten Hag has a more pleasant task in deciding who will feature against Aston Villa on Sunday. One absentee though will be Lisandro Martinez, who injured his medial ligament in that game in a challenge with Vladimir Coufal and who looks set for another lengthy spell on the sidelines. Raphael Varane is likely to step in for the unfortunate Argentinean center back. Martinez joins Mason Mount, Tyrell Malacia and Aaron Wan Bissaka as ruled out for the game, while Anthony Martial underwent surgery on a groin issue and will be out until the end of March. Ten Hag may well be tempted to let the 10 available players who started against West Ham start again here. Rasmus Hojlund is certainly one likely to start after the Dane scored his first goal against Aston Villa, he has scored in four consecutive Premier League games. Youngster Kobie Mainoo is likely to continue in midfield after excelling since being introduced to the team.

Aston Villa - Manchester United Key Points

  1. Up until their games with Newcastle and Chelsea, Villa had won nine and drawn one of their ten home games this season. However successive 3-1 defeats at home has dented that record somewhat and sent the Villains tumbling out of the FA Cup.
  2. Manchester United have won just one of their last five away games in the Premier League, but have won all their last three away games in all competitions (2 FA Cup away wins and the win at Wolves)
  3. Manchester United have won all of the last three between the two teams, 4-2, 1-0 and 3-2.
  4. Four of the last five games between Aston Villa and Manchester United have seen both teams score and over 2.5 goals scored.
  5. Aston Villa have won just one game at home against Manchester United since 1999, a 3-1 win in November 2022. Their two other wins in that time have both come with 1-0 wins at Old Trafford.

Our Aston Villa vs Manchester United Prediction

One thing usually happens when Aston Villa meets Manchester United and that is goals are usually scored. Villa need a result after two poor home performances in the past 10 days, while United come into this game on the back of three away wins in a row in all competitions. Picking a result here is tough, so our Aston Villa v Manchester United prediction is for both teams to score and for over 2.5 goals to be scored.

Aston Villa vs Manchester United - Other Interesting Predictions

Alejandro Garnacho (Manchester United) to score at any time

Manchester United's outstanding young winger Alejandro Garnacho has been in fine goalscoring form of late and looks like being a mainstay of the team for many years to come. With Villa conceding six goals in their last two home games, Garnacho's battle with Matty Cash will likely be a feature of the game and our second Aston Villa v Man Utd prediction is for Garnacho to score at any time in the game on Sunday.

A Penalty to be awarded in the game

Referee Robert Jones has awarded an average of 0.21 penalties per game this season from 14 games he has officiated. He told out four red cards, the joint most with Michael Oliver and John Brooks. Aston Villa have scored all 4 penalties that they have been awarded this season, while Manchester United have scored two of the three they have been awarded. With both teams having issues defensively, and both having very quick and tricky wide players, the chance of a penalty, with this referee, looks high. Our final prediction for Aston Villa vs Man Utd is for a penalty to be awarded in the game.
