Ahli and Al Ittihad are playing catch-up in the Saudi Pro League title race, Al Ahli third and Al Ittihad fourth. The two will face off on Match Week 26 of the campaign, with Al Ahli playing host in the Monday game. Al Ahli, who have 48 points, will be seeking to open a five point gap ahead of Al Ittihad. The most crucial target for them will however be closing in on second placed Al Nassr, who are eight points ahead. Only the top two get to play in the Champions League, which informs why rising to second is Al Ahli’s target. They failed to win in their last two matches, which complicates their situation. One of those two was a defeat at home to second placed Al Nassr. Al Ahli are coming from a 2-2 draw away to Al Ettifaq, where they needed a late Abdullah al Ammar goal to secure a point. Two wins in their last six matches point to the inconsistency that has defined their recent performances. It has been poorer at home, with Al Ahli failing to score in three of their last five games there.

Al Ittihad are also coming from a tough run but in the recent matches they managed to get a hold of things. They went to the international break right from a win and added to it with another on Friday, beating Al Fayha 3-1. Two wins on the bounce signify a good response after falling 2-0 to leaders Al Hilal in the Champions League. All their three defeats in the last 10 matches were at the hands of Al Hilal – twice in the Champions League. They can now build on their three wins in the last four matches. More crucially, a win here would see them move to third, closer to their Champions League target. In Al Ittihad’s last away game, they came from behind at Al Fateh, to win 4-2. They gave it a good response after going behind but will be concerned at their defending. In three straight away matches now, Al Ittihad conceded at least two goals.
