Mosimane Set for Second Stint As South Africa Head Coach

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has given the green light to appoint Pitso Mosimane as the new national team head coach following Hugo Broos's departure. 

The Belgian tactician steered Bafana Bafana to the knockout rounds of a World Cup for the first time in the nation's history last month after pulling off a stunning 1-0 victory over South Korea in their final group-stage match, which confirmed our football predictions. 

The decision to appoint Mosimane came after an NEC meeting at SAFA House on Saturday afternoon. In a statement, SAFA president Danny Jordaan said the formal announcement of the change in leadership will be made during the course of this week. 

Once confirmed, it will mark a second stint in charge of the national team for the 62-year-old South African, who was dismissed from the role back in 2012 following a disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign. 

Mosimane is a former forward himself who earned four caps for Bafana and played for Mamelodi Sundowns, as well as in Greece, Belgium and Qatar. Since his dismissal in 2012, Mosimane has managed clubs in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and most recently Esteghlal in Iran. 

Mosimane ‘Rejects’ Initial R5m Wage Offer from SAFA 

While Mosimane’s return is expected to be confirmed this week, reports suggest that there are still a few contractual details that need to be negotiated, chief among which is the salary package being offered to him by SAFA. 

It is understood that the 62-year-old turned down SAFA’s initial offer of R5-million-a-year, which would have amounted to approximately R416,667 per month. That figure is particularly notable when measured against the reported earnings of some of his predecessors. 

The most striking comparison comes from the era of Carlos Alberto Parreira!

The Brazilian, who famously led the Seleção to World Cup glory in 1994, was appointed to lead South Africa into the 2010 World Cup on home soil, and it is reported that SAFA had handed him a wage package worth R1.8m a month - approximately R21.6m per year. 

Additionally, during Mosimane’s first stint, he was earning approximately R800,000 per month, equivalent to R9.6m per year, meaning his new deal is roughly R4.6m lower than his previous one. SAFA and Mosimane’s representatives are now in negotiations to find a suitable agreement.
